18. Road to Quersan

I was struck. His arrow hitting the branch beneath me. Inches from my fingertips. Immediately Tanner got off his horse and stormed towards me.

"What are you doing here?" He was furious but his eyes seemed glad I was okay.
"So at the start for some odd reason Avery wanted to come out here and find out the real reason why you were going back to Quersan so soon." I was in a joking kind of mood. My voice filled with enthusiasm I spoke so quickly that when he stopped me I almost fainted. I was on a roll.

"Wait Avery is here." He stopped me dead in my explanation.
"Yeah long story short he forged your signature with a few other peoples like Lady Cloette and he's on his way to Quersan instead of Jadesan like he originally said he would. So I suppose thats how he got your signature originally. And I followed him out here and then joined him. He gave me a choice go or stay. Well now here we are."
"Why didn't you force him to go back?" He didn't pay much attention to what I had just said other than the fact that yes Avery was still here.

"One I couldn't stay cooped up in that place for very much longer and two for once he actually sounded controlling. Oh also he packed for two. He knew I would follow. Wouldn't you want to find out why?" For a split second he opened his eyes and his face was blank but with a blink of my eyes it all changed.

Tanner was absolutely furious and angry at me. There was not the gladness in his eyes just annoyance.
"Magic." Zanier spoke from behind Tanner.
"Please give us a second Lady Ambrose." Tanner turned to face Zanier as he took a step back but I wasn't about to be excluded. They deserved to know I overheard there conversation. They were probably fearing that I had when I said I had been spying earlier today as well.

"No I heard what you were sayings. There's no need to hide it from me now."
"What about Milady?"

"Magic, the girl or whatever she is and it's true you may not be able to see it but I can. She's an enchantress of some kind and there is a pink mist that fills the minds of all your riding party and many other normal day people who have joined the ride or quest which ever you prefer to Quersan. All following in the trail of her pink cloud."

I was interrupted once more.
"How long have you been spying?" Tanner completely changed the subject. He couldn't stand me knowing things but I also saw a hint of his wicked smile. Perhaps even proud of how far I had come and my instincts. But he sure didn't show it.

"Today and yesterday."
"You have to get Avery away from here." Tanner looked behind me as if looking to see Avery hidden behind a bush.
"He won't listen." Tanner grabbed my wrist as Zanier held his breathe. Tanner continued increasing the strength in his grip.
"Like you said the men are following in her power. It may be strong enough or be exactly what is luring Avery out here and you were foolish enough to join him. Go home." He through my wrist out of his hand. He took a step back towards his horse.

"What if he doesn't return with me?" I spoke so that anyone within ten or fifteen metres could here me. Tanner strode towards me and spoke into my ear gently.
"If you loose him it won't be your fault."

They mounted there horses and followed the riding party as I stood frozen. Tanner was harsh, blacked hearted and ill tempered. Obviously they knew I was right about her being an enchantress. It was right for him to tell me to get Avery away but his tone. His way about it wasn't very calm or effective. I felt hurt. But I was going to get Avery out of here from my very own decision.

That's why I hadn't told him what I knew. I wanted to get him out of here before he was aware. Because if he was aware he would refuse that it was true and that I was going crazy. He'd call it jealousy or something like that. He'd just laugh and fall further into the trap she had created.
