Gally's POV.
Laurence was more than interested in my theory. It took about a month of searching and drilling through sewage tunnels, but we were in. It was also in this time I learned more about Finley's obsession with tech. I walked in on her a few days earlier, repairing the motor of a large electric drill, she'd looked up at me with a wide goofy grin. The thought of it tugged at the corners of my lips.
Finley gave me a hand to climb out of emergency tunnel entrance and into a small mostly metal room. We opened the door slowly to find no one, and sure enough we'd made it in to the city. I let out a breath of astonishment.
"For years I've wondered what this place was like on the inside." Finley says as we take in our surroundings; We were in an open cobblestone area, surrounded by shiny skyscrapers that I craned my neck to get a better look at. "Look at everyone." She sounds disgusted. I turn my attention to where she's looking. Civilians, dressed in nice clothes, probably walking to work. "It's so... normal." She fails to hide the jealousy in her voice. "Like they don't even care about what's on the other side of their precious walls."
I open my mouth to answer only to loose my train of thought when someone stopped at a red light across the street catches my eye, her dark hair and slim face unmistakable.
"What is it?" Finley asks concerned.
"Teresa?" I answer, though it comes out as a question.
Finley follows my line of sight. "Dark hair, brown coat, ugly bag?" I'm too shocked by the sight of her to roll my eyes at the stupid comment. "Hood up Gally, lag behind me so she doesn't see you." Finley tugs her grey hood over her head and starts following Teresa.
I follow suit, trying to ignore the thousand questions running through my mind. How did she get here? Are the others in the city too? Would they be here willingly...? No way. I answer my own question, as much as I used to hate the shank, Thomas would never put his friends in harms way — and WCKD was the very definition of harms way.
Several blocks later my sinking feeling only gets worse when Finley's hand shoots out to stop me, and I watch in awe as Teresa scans a card and walks through the front doors of the largest building in the city, with 4 massive letters printed on the front.
WCKD
"Sorry Gal." Finley mutters next to me.
I clench my teeth. "Do you think the others would be in there?" I say in a low voice.
"Can't say for sure — unless of course," I can hear her smile as she raises one arm to point at a glowing billboard a block down from us, "that's the Thomas you told me about."
Sure enough it was him, looking a few years younger with the words property of WCKD printed on the top of the screen. More words flashed across the bottom:
If found contact WCKD officials immediately.
"Sounds like that Thomas is just as evasive as you made him sound." I couldn't help but grin a little, if Thomas was free somewhere chances are so were the others. "Come on, we should go."
I was lucky that she'd been paying attention to the street names, otherwise I'd never have found my way back. We slip through the small metal room again and find ourselves back in the grey train tunnel. I wait for Finley to shut the door behind us and we jog back down to our awaiting exit, then the track starts to rumble.
"Fuck." I hear Finley say next to me. We exchange a panicked look and bolt down the last 30 feet towards our escape. I didn't realize how fast Finley was until she reached the tunnel out a good 10 feet ahead of me. I also didn't realize that my chest wound wasn't at 100%. I ran slower than usual I used to, panting twice as hard.
Finley climbs up into the hole, looking back at me in horror as the lights from the up coming train get closer. "Gally!" I push forward, Finley grabbing my shirt as soon as I'm close enough and yanking me violently backwards, the moment before the train wizzes by.
We fall hard, lying side by side on the damp stone, breathing heavily.
"Maybe next time we should time how far apart the trains are, wait for a more opportune moment." Finley suggests through heavy breathing, and though I don't look at her I can hear her cheeky grin form as she speaks.
"You think?" I ask rhetorically. I turn my head to the side to find her already looking at me. The moment our eyes meet I let out a laugh and snort by accident, one that Finley mimics and for us both grows into uncontrollable laughter.
When our laughter finally dies down she picks herself off the ground and offers me a hand. I take it and stand up, the ache in my chest not going unnoticed.
"Glad you're not dead Gal," She looks up at me and I could tell she was trying to keep a relaxed look on her face, even so something about the way she looked a me was incredibly worrisome, "that would've really ruined my day." I notice we're still holding hands and have to force myself to let go before we start walking back, and a weird part of me misses her touch.
Finley does most of the talking when we report back to Laurence. He gives a victorious yet almost ominous smile, Finley later noting aloud that she found it was a great display of emotion coming from the generally reserved man.
That same night we end up on the roof again, standing near the edge and gazing at the city walls with a slightly new perspective.
"Gally," Finley says my name softly, catching my attention. She takes one small stride, eliminating the space between us, and without a word places one of her hands on the back of my neck and presses her lips against mine. I'm still for a split second unsure of myself, but on instinct my eyes flutter shut and I kiss her back. It's a short kiss and a moment I would live in if I could. She draws back a few inches looking at me with her wide curious eyes. "Thanks for not dying today."
"No problem." I answer, suddenly feeling very aware of what just happened. In all my time in the glade wondering what was outside, I never imagined finding something so good.
