Frypan's POV.Soon as Gally, Newt and Thomas have disappeared Laurence gets up to leave too. "If our insurance falls through, it's on you and Gally." He directs at Fin who doesn't react, before scanning the room one last time.
Once he's gone Brenda and Jorge sit close together and start talking in hushed voices.
I turn towards Fin. She's sitting cross legged on a long wooden table fiddling with a screwdriver. Somewhat awkwardly, I sit next to her.
"Frypan." She greets without looking up.
"Fin, right?"
"Finley." She corrects.
"Oh sorry, Gally called you Fin."
"He did." She says simply, I look at her trying to read her. Part of me thinks she looks familiar, something that's never happened before. It was something about her narrow nose, light brown hair and pale complexion that made the bags under her eyes stand out a bit more than most. "Need something?" She asks rhetorically but not rudely.
"Sorry it's just..." I don't have any memories from before the maze, telling her she looks familiar would lead to a dead end, I was probably wrong anyway. I clear my throat. "How long have you known Gally?"
"I was in the group the picked him up, not too long after WCKD took you guys away." She replies thoughtfully. "We found him almost dead, bleeding out with a spear in his chest and some crazy WCKD made drug in his system." She looks at me for the first time, her eyes a soft green and just as familiar as her face. "How long have you known him?"
I laugh lightly. "Long as I can remember, literally."
She lets out a chuckle. "Oh, right."
"He was one of the first ones in the maze, I came up a couple months after him." I remember like it was yesterday.
"Must be strange." She gestures at Jorge and Brenda with her screwdriver. "Who are those two? I don't recognize them from any of Gally's stories."
I wanna ask what stories he's told her but resist, at least for now. "Jorge and Brenda. We met them in the scorch after escaping from WCKD."
"How'd you escape?" She inquired.
"In a nutshell, it was Thomas." I state. "He was suspicious of everything soon as we got there. He and this kid from another maze stole a key card and found a room full of bodies with some kinda weird liquid being extracted from them. We used the vents and a shuckton of running and we were out. They'd overheard something about another group against WCKD hiding in the mountains, called the right arm. Considering we had no other ideas we went there."
"That boy's really got the whole savior shtick down." She snickers, shaking her head, pausing for a second, considering what I said. "If that's the case how'd WCKD get Minho?"
I look down feeling a small pang of remorse. "Not long after we made it to the right arm, Teresa sold us out. WCKD attacked and got a hold of him there... but you don't seems surprised by that."
She purses her lips and nods, "When Gally and I first got past the walls we saw her in the city, entering WCKD's main building of operation. Of course we were never sure what went down, but if she was working for them it couldn't have been good. Sorry man, that's pretty shit."
"Finley, Gally said he had a way into WCKD that requires Thomas, what is it?" I ask, already knowing the answer.
"We need Thomas to lure Teresa away so we can grab her, get her to give us the building layout and help us past the fingerprint ID."
"He's not gonna like it." I can just picture Thomas in all his stubborn glory. "Gotta give it to Gally though, it's a good plan." She nods and I notice a small but genuine smile on her lips. "You really care about him, don't you?"
"What gave me away?" She answers playfully, though something about her demeanor shifts. Something about her suddenly seems somewhere between guilt an worry. "He's a good guy, it's hard not to care." I couldn't help but think of what Thomas would say to that if he were here, but I push that aside and think of the Gally I knew from the maze.
"He is." I decide.
Time flies talking to Finley, for someone who had a lot to worry about she was as blasé as I'd ever seen. Everytime I looked at her I continued to feel the slightest twinge of recognition. She had just finishing telling me about Gally almost being flattened by a train their first time in the city when the ladder rattles, they're back.
Thomas comes up first looking unhappily contemplative, followed by an quiet Newt and finally Gally. His expression a mix of relieved to be back and determined. He finds Finley and makes a B-line towards her.
"Hey 'munie. How'd it go?"
"Good, long as Thomas gets his priorities straight." Gally glances over his shoulder at Thomas who's standing with Newt talking to Brenda and Jorge.
"Come on, we should discuss the plan in a more private place." She gets of the table about to leave but Gally grabs her wrist gently to stop her.
"Wait." He looks at me. "Give us a minute eh Fry."
I look between them and nod, hopping off the table to join the others.
"Hey Fry." Newt greets in a soft voice.
"Hey guys, what was the city like?"
"Big..." Is all Thomas says, his mind clearly somewhere else.
I step a bit closer and ask in a hushed voice, "I'm probably imagining it but," I glance back over my shoulder, "does she look familiar to you guys?"
"That'd be a first wouldn't it." Newt mumbles, none the less looking at Finley who's smiling softly at Gally. "Though I can't say she doesn't." He says, furrowing his eyebrows. "Oi Tommy you've got some memories from being stung, you seen her before?"
Thomas just shakes his head, "Never, though I do see what you mean Fry." He says looking equally puzzled by my discovery.
"Glad to hear I'm not crazy." I mutter. "Anyway we have more important things to discuss."
