Gally's POV.
The intense pain in my chest hits first, then the headache.
"Mornin'" I jump slightly at the rough voice coming from my left. "I've been keeping an eye on you." I look up to find a shaggy haired ageless looking man leaning against the doorframe. He chuckles, probably at the shock on my face, revealing several missing teeth.
"Where am I?" My voice comes out far weaker than I'd like, and even worse, sends me into a violent coughing fit.
"Jeff!" A harsh female voice shouts from the hall, followed by footsteps coming closer. "Don't scare the 'munie, he's only just gotten here." The voice belongs to a girl who enters the small room I'm in with an uncomfortably casual demeanor. She promptly ushers the protesting Jeff out of the room and swings the door shut behind him.
My eyes flick around the small room, to some scratch-like marks on the wall and the wooden table I'm on, then back to the strange girl who's sat herself on a stool across from me.
"Sorry 'bout him." I find myself unable to look away from her. She has uneven brown choppy hair, cheekbones that give her face a slightly surprised feeling, and wild eyes, looking at me with unlimited curiosity. "Who are you then?"
I clear my throat, feeling overwhelmed. "Not sure how to answer that." I answer stiffly.
"Well where did you come fr..." She trails off before cocking her head sideways and narrowing her eyes ever so slightly. "How much of your memory do you have?"
I pause, not sure if I can trust her. "3 years."
"That's it?"
"Yes." I answer honestly sitting up, suddenly feeling angry at how little I knew what was going on. "My turn, what happened and where the hell am I?"
"We're one of many groups trying to take down WCKD, we found you at one of their now abandoned experiment outposts with a spear in your chest. By the way you can expect that right lung of yours to only kinda do what it used to, but hey you're not dead. Plus, you were chalk full of some weird kind of drug, we kept you passed out an extra day to make sure it'd left your system. WCKD plays with some dangerous... shit." She trails off once again, probably seeing my expression. I feel my heart drop. Chuck.
It all rushes back at me, the sound of my gunshot, feeling the thud of the spear in my chest, watching Chuck fall, and hearing Thomas scream.
"You should have left me there." I say in a low voice.
Much to my surprise she scoffs. "Bullshit."
I feel my anger growing unable to contain it I leap of the table, grab the front of her shirt and push her hard against the wall. "I killed an innocent child. I murdered him." I'm shaking as I stare down at her, she looks annoyed at best and if anything interested by the development. I growl. "Don't ask me to live with myself."
There's a terrible silence between us as she looks from my shaking hands holding the balled up front of her shirt then back up at me, now with an expression I suddenly can't read. "In a world like this everyone has either killed someone or they're going to kill someone, unless of course you're fucking dead." Her words are calm and calculated. She looks at me pitifully just for a second before adding. "And most people don't have the excuse that they'd been drugged against their will by an evil corporation." I let go of her and she lightly shoves me back away. "To properly answer your questions, you're in an old house a few of us have been using as a temporary base. Tomorrow we'll be heading back to our main place of operation, near the worlds last city." She tucks her hand in her pockets and smirks at me. "And don't worry 'munie, you'll fit in here just fine." She extends a hand in my direction, I accept, this time with little hesitation. "I'm Finley."
"Gally." She gives me the first genuine smile I've seen in a while. "Do you know what happened to my friends?"
Her smile falters. "The trashed control room was a set up, the dead scientists were cadavers they'd dressed up. It's easier to have captors if they think you're their saviors." I look at her grimly knowing exactly what was coming next. "WCKD still has them." She walks over to the table and sits down. "Now, wanna tell me what they did to you."
Some indistinguishable thing about her screams that she's telling the truth, that I should trust her.
Against my usual habits I sit down across from her and tell her what she wants to know, from the box to now.
