Gally's POV.The second Frypan's out of earshot I let out a shaky breath.
"So how'd it really go?"
"Good, it's just..." I huff. "It's weird feeling like an outsider. I was really close to Newt and Fry at one point. I know it's a lot to ask right now but if we want this all to work out I'm gonna need Thomas to trust me."
"Give it time." She tells me. "And for the record, I don't think Frypan blames you, for anything."
"Thanks Fin."
"Eh, it's what I'm here for isn't it?" She remarks.
"Oh yeah, that for sure. Not building tech for the group?" I play along sarcastically, she shakes her head. "Not taking down WCKD? Not avenging your brother?"
"Of course not, god can you imagine?" She smirks, laughing calmly. "Shall we?"
"Yeah," I turn to the others, "Guys, this way."
I lead everyone to the room where we'd meet every other week to discuss ways into to WCKD, it's hard to believe this time we'd actually have one that could work. Soon enough everyone's gathered around the circular table, which is still covered in makeshift maps and blueprints from the last meeting.
"So to catch everyone up, the main bullet point of the plan requires Thomas to lure Teresa away from the public so we can grab her without it getting reported back to WCKD. Then, depending on the information she gives us about the facility, we have some options that can be discussed then."
All eyes turn to Thomas who's being unnaturally quiet. "No, there's gotta be another way."
"Like what?" I ask exasperated. "You've seen the building. She is our only way in."
"You really think she's gonna help us?" He shoots back.
"I don't plan on asking for her permission."
"Am I missing something here?" Brenda asks. "This is the same girl who betrayed us, correct? Same dick?"
"I like her." I throw out, noticing Finley nod in agreement across from me.
"What's going on?" Brenda asks calmly.
"What, are you afraid your little girlfriend's gonna get hurt?" Newt buts in aggravated. "This has obviously never been just about rescuing Minho, has it?" Everyone else is stunned into silence by Newts harsh tone.
Thomas speaks up. "Wait, what are you talking about?"
"Teresa," Newt stands up, facing Thomas, "she's the only reason that Minhos even missing in the first place. Now we finally have an opportunity to get him back, and what? You don't want to because of her?" He's followed Thomas as he's backed up, almost pressing him against the wall. "Because deep down inside you still care about her, don't you? Just admit it."
Everyone's frozen in place.
"Newt I—"
"Don't lie to me!" He slams Thomas against the wall. "Don't lie to me!"
Newts anger appears to simmer and a look of regret takes its place. I've never heard such silence. I barely process Thomas following Newt out of the room, having instead noticed Finley's foreboding expression contrasting the shock on everyone else's.
"The hell was that?" Frypan breaks the silence first.
Fin looks down avoiding eye contact with a bitter expression. "I'm sorry guys."
The four of us take a second to understand her tone, though I suppose it was obvious: He has the flare.
Finley's POV.
It didn't take long for the five of us left inside to get back to planning. If anything there was another thing driving us forwards, getting the serum for Newt.
I realize after a while just how long they've been gone. and figure I should check on them, make sure no ones giving them trouble. I stand up to leave, making brief eye contact with Gally, who's smile seems a bit closer to a grimace.
I find Newt and Thomas on the roof. They're facing away from me with their legs hanging over the edge. I'm reminded of one of the first nights Gally and I spent on the roof together, sitting in almost the exact same spot. It occurs to me that they were quite possibly having a very similar conversation.
I wait for a moment to realize neither of them are talking before I speak up. "Hey," they turn towards me, "You've been out here a while, just wanted to check in."
"We're fine, thanks for checking in." Thomas says a bit coldly.
I don't move for a moment after they turn back around, trying to think of the right words. "You don't like me, do you?" I throw out, mostly towards Thomas. "'Cause I'm close with Gally, is that it?"
"Look I'm sorry if I've been rude, really." He says sounding genuine but still facing the city. "But you'd be the same if you knew about everything he'd done."
"Do you really think I don't know what he's done?" I retort, not caring how tired I'm sure I sound. "Whatever." I shake my head and turn to leave but stop myself, thinking of what Gally said when they got back earlier, I turn to face them. "You wanna know the first thing Gally said to me six months ago, when he woke up and realized what happened? He said we should have let him die." I say stiffly, still upset by the topic. "I'm pretty sure the only thing that ever turned it around was when I told him that WCKD still had you guys. I think he figured he could help, make amends of some kind even if he never saw you again. Look it's really not my place to say but —" I huff, Thomas still didn't face me. Yet for some reason, whatever frustration I was feeling towards him morphs into pity. "Not a day goes by when he doesn't mention Chuck. I'm sure it was hard for you, but it was hell for him too."
He still doesn't turn but I see him look down at his hands. I exchange a look with Newt, and a moment of understanding seems to pass between us. I give him a courteous nod, and with that turn and leave them alone once again.
