It happened after all. Not the way I wanted it to. Worst part was I was there and I could do nothing to avoid it.
If the words had power to burn you down literally, I was burned over and over today. The anger and the hatred I saw in Eli's eyes was enough to burn me down into ashes. But it didn't matter to me as much as when I realised that hatred was towards Eve too.
Eli was one of the most sensible and responsible person I had come across after Bridget and Eve. Eli would never hurt anyone no matter what.
But today was different.
Few hours back, I was relieved. I thought finally there was some light at the end of the tunnel. Since Eva left me my life had been dark and gloomy. But when Bridget told me about lunch plans, I thought I had chance to make the things between me and Eve normal again. Not the way I wanted them to be but here was some hope.
As I got ready and headed towards lunch venue I was feeling my heart thumping inside my chest. It was beating so loud that person sitting next to me would have heard it.
When I reached, Bridget was there sitting at the table. She was talking to someone. She told me to sit with her eyes. She was talking to someone in charge of the wedding arrangements. After she was done, she hung up the call and looked at me.
Her eyes were just like Eve, soft and sympathetic. Eve reminded me so much of Richard but her eyes were exactly like Bridget. I felt instant comfort.
She placed her hand on mine and said,"Josh, thanks for coming."
"You don't have to be so formal. I'm glad that you asked me to join for lunch."
"I'm glad too. We are meeting after few years all of us together."
I was about to remind her about Richard's funeral but those weren't exactly happy times.
"Josh I feel so happy when I see you three all grown up. You have made me proud. I know Richard would be proud too. Eli and Eve are so happy together. "
That felt like a stab to the heart. It shouldn't though. Eva and I had been broken up long time back. And yet here I was thinking about her again. Actually I never really stopped loving her. I was broken when she left.
After the breakup, Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months and a year passed by. I wanted to do better. All the things I had done wrong, I wanted to correct them. Especially what went down with Cori. In the time I managed to correct my mistakes and collect myself, Eve had started seeing Eli.
I remembered the day I went to see her having no clue that Eli and her were together. I wanted to surprise her.
That day, Standing on the porch of her house, I saw Eli and her, laughing and sitting together.
I didn't blame her as I never really asked her to wait. Somewhere I felt I should have asked her to wait for me but I didn't know if I would be able to correct all my mistakes.
I took a deep breath. I had been silent for sometime now and Bridget was screening me with her eyes. I smiled weakly.
"Yes they are happy and they deserve it."
"Josh I know it is hard for you. I don't want to push you. It's high time that you and Eva start getting along again."
I took a deep breath and said,"yes, I understand and I will give my best."
She smiled in her usual gentle way and her phone started ringing. Her face turned grave, she looked at me,"sorry I have to take this."
And she went off. After few minutes, I turned to see Eva coming towards the table. She was nervous I could tell and I wanted it to be as easy as possible. Luckily we had a good start, we both relaxed and it almost felt like old times. I just wanted Eli to be there sooner so that once again we become our old self together.
