"Rise and shine sleepyhead." Carrie pulled the curtains aside and the sun's rays peeped through the large glass window.
Jayla sat up and let out a yawn.It was then that it finally dawned on her. She looked in Carrie's direction. Carrie was already dressed up in a striped off-shoulder top over a black skirt and had made her permed hair into straight blunt bangs that flowed like silk over her shoulders.
"Omg... it's the first day of college!"
"Took you long to realize," Carrie rolled her eyes sarcastically.
"And you didn't think about waking me up earlier?"
"I did but this sleeping beauty would just not budge."
"Go take a shower. I'll get breakfast. We have an hour to be in college."
"Aye aye sir"Jayla got out of bed, hopped in the shower and started getting ready.
It was the day of college. A fresh start. A new dawn. She took a deep breath.
Jayla Carlson Whyte, 18 and a freshman at Harvard. She shared an apartment with her best friend and cousin, Carrie, in Boston.
It was a half past seven. She pulled her Afro into a low bun and picked a black high-neck halter top over a pair of jeans. She got into a mini denim jacket and slid her feet into a pair of sneakers to perfect her look.
That'll have to do. She was overly excited.
Jayla walked in as Carrie sat down to eat. Carrie had already placed some coffee and bagels on the table. That was what Jayla needed now- an energy booster. She was still jetlag.
Jayla sat, poured herself a cup of steaming coffee and reached for a bagel.
"mm... these bagels smell so good Carrie."
"What can I say I'm the best cook ain't I?"
The girls laughed. Carrie could not cook to save her life."I don't know what I'd do without you. This is just what I needed to revitalize myself." Jayla admitted.
"Coffee is like prayer, it awakens your spirit and improves your day. Fill your cup with both." Carrie articulated with false precision.
"I don't think that's how it goes."
"Whatever."
The girls laughed again and with their morning meal before them, they bowed their heads in prayer.
They ate quickly and hurried to their car.Carrie rode shotgun as Jayla steered the gleaming silver Mercedes Convertible out of the underground garage of their apartment building. Cambridge was a 15min drive from Boston.
For the two young girls, Harvard was a dream come true.
Harvard University is a private Ivy League research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is the United States' oldest institution of higher learning and one of the most prestigious in the world.
It has campuses throughout Greater Boston. What's more? Harvard Library is the world's largest academic system.
All gratitude was to God. He's been their solid rock from day one.
Renee, Jayla's mum and role model is an alumna.
She pursued medicine as well but specialised in pathology. Jayla hoped to specialise in neurosurgery. It was her passion.
Carrie is pursuing economics. The two have been best friends since they were five. They were almost inseparable. This was a big step for them and they were glad they were taking it together- side by side.
After completing all the paperwork, Jayla dropped Carrie off in the Allston neighbourhood of Boston and headed to her campus in Boston's Longwood Medical Area.
"Break a leg." She said as they parted ways. The school of health sciences held a meeting, an orientation or an introductory session, you could say. It was a very boring session. They were assigned classes and had basic introductions to the course.
That was all for the day- simply insipid.
She texted Carrie."Hey. Done for the day?"
"Nope. I'm stuck in some lame introductory session."
" [*giggles*] Okay. Hit me up when you're done."
"Will do"She thought of something to do while away time. She was dying to see the world-famous Widener Library so she went over. It was quite a distance from where she set off.
She was finally here.
Inside, she couldn't help but gape. It was the whole world in there. She spent the first few minutes trying to snap out of her bewilderment. She was reeling in shock. She located the reception desk and in a couple seconds, she had gone through the necessary protocol.
School hadn't begun so she settled a Havard brochure. But after some time, she found herself reading and rummaging through some Psychology books.
She received a text from Carrie.
It was time to go pick her up.She was moving towards her car when someone stopped her in the alley.
"Hey!" He called out and raced to where she stood.
She looked at him, puzzled.
"I was in the library earlier when you walked in and I'm afraid I didn't get your name?" He replied with a seductive smirk.
"I'm sure you'll be fine without it." She replied with a forced smile, turning to leave.
He grabbed her arm and she resisted him. She was shocked by his boldness."Don't be scared cutie I don't bite." He winked. That gave her the creeps.
He took a step closer. She glanced around. The alley was pretty empty. He took another step closer.
"Don't come any further!" She warned.
"Oh come on cutie." He took the third step.
Just then...
"She said BACK OFF!!!" a deep baritone voice came through. You'll have to read my books Intense and Chasing me down for a better understanding of this story.
