[Timeskip: around 4 years later]
Alex: *in the kitchen* JOHN I BURNT THE SOUP!
John: Throw it away then!
Alex: *confused* H-HOW?!? IT'S SOUP!
John: Maybe you should let me cook more often then.
Alex: Yes, please! I'm... I'm bad at this.
John: I know.
Alex: Can you help me, please??
John: Yes. Start by throwing the soup away.
Alex: *still holding the soup, looks around* W-What do you mean? In the trash?
John: Yes, in the trash. Where else do you throw things away?
Alex: I dunno. *throws soup in the trash* Okay. Done.
John: *takes a new can out of the pantry, sets a pot on the stove, pours the can of soup in, turns up the heat* Like that.
Alex: That's what I did!!
John: *gets out a wooden spoon, stirs the soup* Yeah, uh-huh. What'd you do next?
Alex: Umm... I let it sit there.
John: For how long?
Alex: ...I dunno.
John: Yeah, that's where you went wrong. *sets a timer*
Alex: Oh... Can you teach me to cook?
John: How do you not know how to cook...?
Alex: Never learned. You usually cook. My meals are always microwaved or just cereal.
John: *sighs* Yeah. Soup is easy, mkay? You just pour it in and follow the directions.
Alex: *confused* What directions?
John: The ones on the side of the can...
Alex: *very confused*
John: There's directions for everything, Alex. That's how you cook.
Alex: I usually just make up my own directions.
John: See, that's where you're wrong.
Alex: My directions are fine. They sometimes work.
John: You asked me to teach you how to cook. I'm trying to teach you.
Alex: *leans on John* I give up!
John: Fine. But let me cook on my own from now on then.
Alex: *wraps arms around John's waist from behind, buries face into John's back, muffled* Okay.
John: Good.
Alex: *silent for a second, pulls his head back* When's it going to be done?
John: Soon. *stirs the soup again*
Alex: *groans, buries face back into John*
John: You can stay here the whole time. It doesn't take long.
Alex: Mkay.
John: *changing the subject* So... adoption papers going through well?
Alex: Yeah. It's not as boring as I thought it would be. I'm just excited.
John: That's good!
Alex: *smiles at the ground* I can't wait.
John: Yeah. Me neither.
