The next day at school was as awkward as it gets.
Laura avoiding me which causes me to sit alone on the bus.
Miles not looking at me in any class.
Skylar rushing to get to class when she sees me.
Erik looking down whenever we pass eachother in the halls.
It was probably my loneliest time in all my years going to Lukewood.
And lunch was the absolute worst.
I had sat down at our usual table, hoping Skylar and Erik forgot about everything. Erik usually arrives before Skylar does and I knew that when we made eye contact, neither of us forgot. He looked down, to the left, just anywhere where I wasn't.
Skylar finally came and sat down on the other side of the table next to Erik when he moved one seat further from her. She moved next to him again but, he just moved with her. Skylar finally gave up and planted her string bag beside her seat.
For the first ten minutes, nobody said anything. We just looked down or tried to distract ourselves with something other than eachother.
Erik was the first one to speak up,but only to Skylar.
"So,do you like anyone,Sky?" he said,as if hoping it wasn't him.
I looked over at Skylar as her mouth opened and then closed and opened and closed again, like she was going to say something but didn't.
"Yea." she finally answered, her voice quiet.
"Uh,who is it?" Erik said. His voice was shaky and he looked nervous.
Skylar looked up at me and I just looked down again.
Finally looking down again,she said
"I've been meaning to tell you but it's kind of weird.Well,I uh,I kinda...""Yea?" he urged her to continue, his eyebrows raised.
"IKindaLikeYou." she said fast and low.
I looked over at Erik, poor Erik, looking slumped over and defeated.
I had to tell Skylar if Erik wasn't going to.
"Um,S-skylar." I stuttered.
"Yea?" she looked up innocently.God,this was gonna crush her.
"Yesterday,I invited Erik over since I was mad at you,Laura wasn't talking to me and my mom wasn't home." I said.
She waited for me to say more.
"And?" she said after a few moments."And Erik and I kinda uh..."
"Yes?" she said as she raised her eyebrows.
Erik looked like he was going to die.
"We kinda kissed." I finally said as I exhaled, finally.
She sat there staring at the table.Just stared. She didn't say anything. She didn't move. She didn't look at us.She just stared at the table.
"A-are you okay,Sky?" Erik asked.
"No." she muttered in return.
"I think I'm going to throw up." she added as she got up and ran straight for the ladies room.
"Ah sh*t." Erik muttered under his breath.
"What are we going to do?" I asked him.I genuinely had no idea what she was going to do or how this was gonna turn out.
"I don't know,Hailey.
I just don't know."
