Calvin's POV**
"Caroline?" My mother asks with her eyes wide.
I guess I have to tell her the truth now.
Caroline answers before I do, "Uh... Calvin invited me for dinner." She says nervously. My mother frowns and looks at us from head to toe and Caroline speaks up again, "He called me at short notice and I got here just in time. I think he just got out of the shower."
She chuckles nervously obviously pointing out my damp hair. I'll be surprised if my mother believes this lie. Caroline is a bad liar, although it does make me wonder why she wants to lie to my mother.
My mother's eyebrows shot up, "Very short notice, sweetheart. Looks like your hair is also damp."
I look at Caroline's hair tied up in a bun which makes this situation look a tad bit better. If it were down, it'd look wetter which would make things worse.
"Would you like to come with us, Mother?" I ask, changing the subject.
She looks at me stunned, "Oh." She breathes out a sigh of relief and grins, "Thank god. Of course, I'll go. For a second there, I thought you guys might be seeing each other."
Caroline gives her a sad smile and my mother hurriedly links her arm with her.
"What would you like to eat, Mrs. Gold?" Caroline asks her as they start to walk out and I want to groan.
Can't I have her for a full day to myself?
"Some seafood would be nice? But I'll go wherever you guys were planning on going." My mother smiles sweetly at Caroline.
"We're getting Italian," I answer my mother and I don't care if I don't sound happy. I want Caroline to myself.
"That's fine with me. I know Caroline's favorite is Italian." She says as I lock the door behind me.
We get all the way down to the garage and my mother insists on Caroline sitting in the back of the car with her while I drive them. This is worse than not telling her.
When we get to the restaurant my mother does nothing but talk to Caroline and only pokes fun at me for being moody, which I do nothing to hide.
"I hope you weren't expecting this to be a date, baby." My mother says to me now that we're done with our food. She seems more chipper with her two glasses of wine. "I love you, but Caroline deserves more than a moody man." She giggles and looks over at Caroline. "Caroline is always taking care of everyone, it's her turn to find someone who will take care of her."
Caroline only looks up to meet my eyes for a second and looks back at my mother nervously.
"What if I'm not moody with her? What if I can make her feel happy?" I ask her seriously while frowning.
My mother straightens up on her seat and so does Caroline. She obviously doesn't want her to know because she's almost pleading with her eyes for me to shut up.
My mother laughs like it's a joke, "Don't be serious, Calvin. I've seen you with Danielle."
I want to tell her, Caroline is nothing like Danielle and tell her that I do in fact want to make Caroline happy and I've been doing just fine with that. But Caroline interrupts once again.
She chuckles nervously, "Calvin's joking, Mrs. Gold. We're just friends, he just likes to rile you up."
My mother smirks at Caroline, "Seems like it." But then her smirk drops, "Thank you for the lovely dinner, Calvin. I had so much fun with the two of you, I almost forgot to tell you what I initially came to see you for."
