I picked something simple and easy to cook tonight. I invited Bunny over to eat.
After our run-in yesterday, I felt faint and had him just give me his number. I practically ran to the coffee store and sat there for an hour before I went back into the office. I really wanted to pick up the phone and call Calvin, but I don't want him to think that we can just pick up where we left off.
When I came home and I was alone in my room I let all the tears unleash from all the hurt with Calvin and a lifetime of hurt of being alone. Knowing I have more family besides the little baby growing inside of me, was a little overwhelming.
After a nap and some food, I was able to pull myself together and text Bunny and see if he wanted to meet for dinner today. His response was almost immediate.
Just as I'm placing the steak on its plate, the doorbell rings, and I wipe my hands on a kitchen towel as fast as I can and run to get the door. My nerves are getting the better of me.
I open the door and I'm surprised he's not in a suit but he's still dressed in designer clothes, wearing a white Burberry button-up and khaki pants. I can also see his shoes are designer.
A backpack is hanging from one shoulder and my eyes dart back up to his unusual eyes.
He has money.
"Hi." He smiles as he leans in for a hug.
My throat gets choked up when I hug him back.
This is really my brother?
"Hi." I pull back and smile up at him, "Come in. I made dinner and we have so much to talk about."
Letting him in, I see him taking in the place with a smile on his face as he places his backpack near the door. My heart swells knowing my life has taken a turn. I love that our penthouse has an open concept so the dinner table is literally in view of the kitchen, but it doesn't help that I was watching a reality TV show when I was cooking and forgot to turn it off.
"I'm sorry. I'll turn it off." I walk over to grab the remote and turn it off as I feel my cheeks getting hot.
"No worries." He looks around the kitchen and smiles again when he meets my gaze, "I'm really happy you live in a really nice place coming from a line of foster homes that weren't the nicest. This must feel like an accomplishment."
I nod and walk over to our plates, that I had just served us before he got here. I pour him a glass of wine while I stick with my glass of water.
"This looks really good." His smile falters a little when his eyes shift to my glass of water, "Do you not like wine?"
"Oh." I clear my throat and shift in my seat, "I'm a big fan of wine. I'm just pregnant so..." I clear my throat again.
His smile brightens and he slightly leans forward, "Sorry. I wasn't even able to tell."
I chuckle softly, "Yeah, now that I look permanently bloated I like to wear loosely fitted blouses. My belly isn't big and round yet where someone would just be able to tell I'm pregnant. Right now, they'd just think I'm gaining weight."
He chuckles and takes the fork and knife next to his plate, "You have a blessing growing inside of you. Who cares if they think you're gaining weight. How far along are you?"
I pick up my fork and knife and smile, "I'm fourteen weeks now. I have five more months to go."
He looks down to cut into his steak, "And the father? He still around?"
"Er." I cut into my steak too, "Yeah, we're having some issues at the moment and he's been wanting to meet with me to talk, but I've been doing a great job avoiding him."
