"Kara, come on. You've got to get out of there.", Natasha pleaded, standing on the opposite side of Loki's door. After a few minutes of silence, the super-spy sighed, eyes shifting to Loki.
"Nothing?", he asked, to which the redhead shook her head at. It was Loki's turn to breathe out heavily. "She needs some space, Loki. All the trauma, the torture, the pain... there's only so much a woman can bear.", Natasha added, hesitating at first, but patting the god on the shoulder. Surprisingly, Loki didn't flinch at this harmless gesture. She gave him a sad smile and walked away, heading back to her team.
The God of Mischief desperately wanted to know what was going on inside, what was going on with Kara. The horror in her eyes, the tears threatening to fall down her cheeks... it was vividly plastered in his mind. He leaned against the door, listening for anything... anything at all. All he heard were birds chirping, meaning Kara left the window open.
"How is she?", a voice spoke from behind, catching Loki a bit off-guard. The younger god turned around to see Thor holding a food tray in his hands, looking at him with concern. Loki simply shook his head.
"Honestly, I do not know.", the raven-haired god replied, causing the blonde prince to look at him in amusement. " 'Honestly'? Well, that's a first.", Thor mused, earning a look from his brother that said 'Not now, Thor'.
Thor chuckled in response, patting Loki's back then leaving the food tray on the floor. "I am going to help the others fix things up around here. I trust you with Lady Kara, yes?", the God of Thunder asked, and Loki scoffed in response. "Is that a question or an insult?"
"Take it as both." With that, Thor left. "Idiot.", Loki muttered under his breath.
As the minutes passed by, Loki grew more and more anxious at what was happening on the other side of the door that separated him and his ex-lover. His mind raced at endless possibilities of what she could be doing at the moment to distract her from her grief: reading one of his books, crying heavily, listening to music, attempting to take her bangles off, packing up her stuff...
His eyes widened at the last two thoughts.
Wait. Could she really...?
With that, Loki used his seidr to let himself into his own chambers, only to find his last thought happening right in front of him.
"What in the name of Valhalla are you doing?", the god inquired, his voice stern and his eyes fixed on the open duffel bag currently sat on his bed. Kara froze at his tone, straightening herself up as she slowly turned around to meet his intense gaze.
It was at this moment that Loki took her all in. Her bloodshot eyes, ruffled hair, smudged lipstick, disheveled clothes: all physical manifestations of the broken woman standing in front of him. Loki then glanced at her wrists, only to see the bangles still present with no hint of being tampered with.
His eyes instantly softened as he studied her features, approaching her with utmost caution. Kara noticed this and instinctively backed away until the bag of her legs hit the edge of Loki's bed.
"It seems you have forgotten our little...", he trailed off, finally reaching her and tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "...agreement."
Kara refused to look up at him in the eyes, partially ashamed of having been caught and also afraid of her seeing her fully in this state.
"Wherever I go, that is where you go. Unless I leave, you stay here. Understood?", Loki added, raising an eyebrow. The lady before him shook her head, puzzling the god.
"I can't stay here, Loki. He's after me.", she finally spoke, and the crack in her voice was the cherry on top of her whole appearance.
"You don't think I know that?", he inquired. "If you leave this compound, efforts to get you will be far easier compared to when you're here."
"Maybe that's better. If I just leave.", she retorted, her jaw clenching as she stared at him. Loki shook his head. "You do not know that."
"Tell me, what's the difference if I stay here? You all have your own businesses, right? I'm better off dead, anyways-" She was interrupted by hands grabbing her shoulders firmly and their chests being pressed together.
"We do have our own businesses, Kara. Mine so happens to be you, remember?", he stated, his hold on her tight, as if she was going to vanish any moment. "Fury's directives, how could I forget?", she replied, a slight harsh tone in her voice. Loki pulled away at this.
"Do you truly think I am doing this for that one-eyed mortal?", the god asked incredulously, furrowing his eyebrows. Kara shrugged. "As if there were any other reason-"
Another interruption, this time by a pair of lips clashing with her own rather roughly. One hand roamed her back, while the other grabbed a fistful of her locks, pushing her head against him.
Kara could feel tears brimming her eyes, and she couldn't understand what tears there were.
Loki pulled away, leaving both of them breathless and slightly dazed. He stared at her with an expression that seemed to be a mixture of anger, hurt and... longing.
"I cannot believe how dense you are.", he said, shaking his head and raising his hands in the air in disbelief.
"How can I not be, Loki? I'm not blind, nor am I as dumb as you think I am.", Kara snapped back, letting the tears fall freely on her cheeks now, instantly silencing the God of Mischief.
With one last look at her bags and clothes, Kara left the room, leaving Loki standing all by himself and pondering over her words. The god flicked his fingers, and in the blink of an eye, her clothes were hung back up and the bag was shoved in the closet.
As Kara fled from the chambers she shared with him, she almost ran over the food tray on the floor, and accidentally bumped into Steve and Natasha.
"Woah, there!", Natasha remarked. Steve gazed at her with concern. "Are you feeling better?" The young lady shook her head quickly and hugged him, causing Steve to exchange glances with Nat. The captain awkwardly rubbed her back, while Natasha glared daggers towards Loki's room.
"Did Loki do anything to you? I swear I'm gonna-" "No, he didn't.", Kara cut Natasha off, giving her a sad smile. The redhead nodded at her words.
A light bulb ticked in Steve's head. "Come on, I know what we can do to distract you for a moment."
