The square was gigantic. There were a lot of marble benches and trees. At its center, there was a fountain with a statue of a man pointing a heavy sword at the bright sun and spewing water
Strange little buildings lined the site. They were very different from the ones Garley was used to; they had an undeniably eccentric shape. He fixed his gaze on one of them, which seemed to be made of marble, similar to the old Greek constructions. He then gazed at another building, which was slightly different; it was much higher than the rest of the buildings and seemed to be made of black granite. It had only a few windows, all of them irregular and narrow.
He couldn't believe what he was seeing. He thought he might be dreaming, but it felt so real. He pinched himself to make sure he was awake and confirmed it wasn't just a strange dream. No... it was an even stranger reality.
"Where am I?" he asked, his eyes wide open.
In the square, the people wore strange and extravagant clothes and were walking and talking as they headed to destinations unknown to Garley. Others seemed as if they were just going about their normal workday. A woman walked by him, exuberant and eye catching in her long red gown made of silk. On her head, a turban full of rubies complemented her beautiful and shiny black hair. She was singing a soft song, unknown to him.
Could I be crazy? How did I get to such a weird place?
He sat on an empty bench facing a giant tree, and he tried to concentrate on deciding what to do. He then walked towards a man who was sitting on a bench close to his, considering asking him a question, almost sure he wouldn't get a delicate answer. He was unsure if these people even spoke the same language as he did.
The man was reading a newspaper. He was wearing a red fur coat with a dragon sewed on it. He had a long tangled black beard. He was large. He was wearing a lime green bowler hat over his wavy hair and was smoking a black pipe.
"Excuse me, what is this place?" asked Garley in a low voice.
"Well, it's the square!" answered the man in a bitter creaking voice, letting out small spirals of smoke that made Garley nauseous. The man quickly returned his attention to his newspaper with a closed expression on his face.
Garley was able to read the newspaper headline, written in a lively red color: Carolinda's Great Spectacle!
"Carolinda?" he asked himself, trying to remember if he had ever heard that name before.
"What is it?" the man asked slowly, lowering his newspaper. "Are you going to sit there bothering me?"
Garley backed up a little bit as the man stared at him angrily.
"I'm sorry but... Would you mind telling me where I could find someone in authority?" he asked, now feeling angry as well. One of the things he hated most in the world was when someone was rude to him.
"Authority? The closest person with authority around here is Mr. Aldrich. He lives right beyond those trees," the man explained. pointing towards the trees that enclosed the square and to the opposite side where there were some buildings. "Now, let me read my damn paper!"
"Thank you," Garley said, quickly moving away from the man. Following the stranger's instructions, he walked towards the far side of the square. He felt a little scared of what he might find beyond those large trees. However, if he wanted answers to what was going on around him, he would do whatever was necessary.
Gathering courage, he started walking through the trees. He had barely begun to walk before the trees became fewer and fewer.
He was now in a large field, a little steep, with one house placed in it.
