Garley was excited about what was to come next. This could be his only chance of them finding the portal.
"Well, here is my grandmother's legacy!" said Johnny, with a subtle smile.
"Give me a match," Aldrich said.
"Johnny, turn the lights off," said Aldrich, as he carefully opened the parchment and blowing away a thin layer of dust that was over the surface.
He removed the small oval and colorful stones from a small bag, held them on the palm of his hands, and lit the match that Johnny had just given him. Points of colorful light emerged from his hand, moving slowly from one point to another over the old map, where images started to appear.
On the footnote, written in fine and small lettering, a message appeared:
Dear Johnny, when you read this, I will probably be already dead. I want you to know that I have always loved you. I made this map because I believe that one day you will help someone use it.
Below it, there was riddle:
Through the thorny trail, go until the highest peak among the three sisters, where your final destiny awaits.
When Aldrich finished reading it aloud, Johnny seemed visibly touched.
It surprised everyone when Johnny began to run his fingers over the map, thus dragging the images in different shapes and movements that revealed various parts of the forest itself, just like an incredible puzzle on a computer screen. After a few minutes, it all went blank again and only a green smoke lighted the room.
"Fantastic!" said Aldrich. "Laura was right, Johnny. Your grandmother was much more lucid than she appeared to be."
Garley couldn't contain his enthusiasm. That map was perfect!
Laura appeared at the top of the stairs, appearing worried, standing beside her daughter. "What is all this? Am I going crazy or did that green smoke just come from down there?"
"Laura, we have something extremely important to tell you," said Aldrich. "We are coming up!"
Garley was the first to climb the staircase, which shook with each step, followed by Aldrich and Johnny. They all walked to the living room where Alix served them tea.
Aldrich looked at Laura with a serious expression and said, "Do you remember the medallion hidden in the outside world? Well, you know that it was I who... I lost it before even hiding it, and someone else found it." He gestured towards Garley.
Laura, who had been smiling and calm up until that moment, was now astonished and shocked.
"Are you telling me this boy found it?" she asked, studying Garley with wide eyes.
"Yes, Dear," answered Johnny, shaking his head. "Aldrich, show her the medallion."
Aldrich took the small gold medallion from his pocket and showed it to her. Laura and Alix stared at it in surprise.
"What now? Is he going to be stuck here forever?" Laura asked, looking at Garley with a mix of pity and despair in her eyes. She immediately was able to guess all that had befallen him.
"Laura, we are going into the forest in search of the portal," said Aldrich, showing her the map.
Laura raised her eyebrows. "How?" she asked, as if she had just heard the most absurd thing in her life. "You want to go into the forest? Are you insane?"
Aldrich nodded and then said, "Of course, we shall have things to help us. And one of them is this map left by Johnny's grandmother. All the information that was hidden for so long will make our search much easier and... Obviously, we are going to do some research before leaving..."
