After ten minutes of scrambling to find Popsicle sticks and two decent markers, I hopped into Mina's car and started making the sticks for later while she drove, a little worried that the two of us would be late.
Turns out, we didn't need to. When the two of us reached my old house, no one else was there. The two of us stepped out the car and no one else was there. I looked at my watch. Where were they?
Just then, two cars pulled up and parked some five houses away from the destination. The two boys showed up soon after.
"What took so long?", I asked. "Mina and I were waiting!"
"Sorry, I had to help with dinner, and Jinyoung was a little reluctant to let me out this late", Yugyeom replied.
"And I had to help one of my brothers with something, because apparently one of his friends managed to burn something in our house, and listened to my younger brother when he said to put water on it", Yuta added.
"Oh, is that why there was smoke coming from your window?", Mina asked. He nodded. "Makes sense".
"Alright, enough chit chat, let's just get into it", I intervened, holding the cup of sticks. "Pull one. The color is at the bottom. No peaking, or we'll redraw. Once everyone has a stick, reveal your stick". I took a stick, then passed the cup, and so forth. Once everyone had a stick, I took the cup back and told everyone to reveal their sticks, but one at a time. I revealed my stick first, then used my phone's flashlight to figure out the color, which was yellow. Then I told Mina to reveal hers, which was orange. The boys then decided to reveal their sticks at the same time, knowing that either one of them had a chance at being my partner. Honestly, I don't see why they're so competitive but whatever floats their boats, I guess.
In the end...
"Huh? Mine's yellow, but so is his?", Yugyeom asked in confusion.
Looking at both of their sticks, I cursed. Shit, they were right. I must've accidentally colored three sticks yellow instead of two. Not wanting to engage a fight (and not seeing the big deal), I told them to just play rock paper scissors, winner teams up with me.
They faced each other, and played. On their first five attempts, they kept tying, which was annoying the crap out not just them, but me too.
Jesus Christ you guys, at this rate, we're not gonna get ANY sleep and my stepfather is gonna catch us out here, I thought.
"FUCK!"
Yugyeom's swearing snapped me out of my thoughts. "What happened?", I asked.
"I told myself not to put out rock and I put out rock anyway, and now I lost", he said.
I wasn't sure whether to laugh at his stupidity or to just move on from it. I originally decided to move on but then Mina started laughing and soon all four of us were laughing.
"Alright, let's go", I intervened once everyone had calmed down. "The sooner we finish this, the less sketchy we seem. Now let's try to get into the backyard". I moved towards the gate with the others following. Thankfully, the gate was unlocked like I thought it'd be, making it easy to slip in. Going into the backyard, we stood there for a bit trying to figure out how the four of us were going to get up to the window in the first place, since their rooms were on the second floor.
"Isn't there a ladder next to the shed? We can lean that against the patio roof and walk across it to get the hybrids, then have them walk back across it", Mina suggested. She then walked over to the shed and grabbed the ladder. "Someone help me, it's kind of heavy".
A/N: i have no clue if there's an official term for patio roof lmao
I walked over to help her and the boys followed suit. Together, we somehow managed to lift the ladder and lean it against the patio roof without making enough noise to wake up the neighborhood. Or my stepfather, thank goodness.
"Great. I don't think the ladder is going to be able to support the four of us, six when we count the hybrids, so why don't two of us go now, save one of them, while the other two hold the ladder steady?", I suggested. "Mina, you wanna go first, or should I?"
"I can go first", she said. "Come on Yugyeom, we don't have all day".
The tall boy followed grumpily. He was probably still mad about losing at rock paper scissors, especially because of a dumb mistake.
"Which one do we save?", Mina whispered.
"Either one, you decide", I replied back.
The two went for Jin, since his room was closest, leaving Yuta and I by ourselves for a bit to kill some time.
"While we're waiting, why don't we play a game?", he suggested. "I was thinking Two Truths and a Lie, sound good?"
I looked at him. "Like I said in text, not the best time or place. But I suppose one round can't hurt. Here's mine: my favorite color is green, I've visited the Great Wall before, and the reason I ran into you was because my crush's girlfriend confronted me in the bathroom and made me feel bad."
"Hmm...the third one sounds too obvious, so I'm guessing that one", he replied. I shook my head. "Nope. I don't have a favorite color; it keeps changing".
"Oh..." Yuta looked for a minute as if he was about to say something, but whatever he was about to say was cut off by Yugyeom letting the two of you know that they've got Jin.
"Perfect, now let him down first then you two can follow through. Once all three of you are down here, we'll start climbing up", I instructed. He nodded, before sending Jin down the ladder, followed by himself and Mina, the latter of which was carrying two sheets of paper.
"Here are their certificates; now you probably can't get in trouble?", she told me.
"Let's hope", I say, before waving hi to Jin and climbing up the ladder to the patio deck, with Yuta right behind me. "Let's make this quick, it's almost midnight and I'd like to get some sleep for school tomorrow", I told him.
"Same here, let's go", he replied, before following me to the window of Kookie's room. Opening the window, I gently woke up Kookie before half-guiding, half-carrying him out the window and down the ladder, closing both windows along the way.
Once the three of us had safely climbed down, we carried the ladder back to its spot and shuffled out of the backyard.
"We did it guys!", I quietly cheered. "High five!"
The six of us went and high-fived each other. When I got to Yugyeom, however, instead of a normal high-five, he let his hand interlock with mine, and left it like that for a few seconds, before finally letting go.
That's new.
Turning to look at the rest, I couldn't help but notice a twinge of jealousy on both Mina and Yuta's faces. I then changed the subject. "So, pizza after school?"
They all agreed, before heading home, me with Mina, Jin, and Kookie. The whole ride was silent, as Mina wouldn't say anything and the young hybrids had fallen asleep.
Once we got to Mina's and carried the tired hybrids to their beds, I asked about her silence. "You're never that quiet. Did I do something?"
She shook her head. "You didn't do anything. I...it's nothing. Just stupid shit, you know?"
I tilted my head in confusion. "I want to say I understand, but I don't. Does this have something to do with someone?"
"You could say that." She turned away. "It's fine, Melody. Don't worry about it too much", she said, smiling weakly.
Not completely convinced but also not wanting to be insistent if she wasn't comfortable with sharing her feelings, I went to bed and left it at that.
so did this end up being two days late? yes, yes it did.
sorry guys😅
