alright, recap, in case you skipped my last chapter bc of the trigger warning:
basically Jin and Kookie are both still a bit shaken up from being stuck at that hellhole for some time. Jin especially, because he almost started something that would've only hurt him in the long run but thankfully was talked out of it.
also can you believe it's been a year since I've started this story? when I first started, I wrote this for fun and didn't think the story would gain attention. I was already surprised when I hit 100 reads, so the fact that the story currently has 2k reads? it may not seem like much compared to other stories out there, but for me, who didn't even expect to get over 10, it's plenty. thank you; I couldn't have gotten this far without you.
now without further ado, onto the story.
10/24/21: Jesus Christ I'm at 17.1K reads now and the story's two years old now. thanks everyone, I really do appreciate it.
I woke up the next morning with no major problems, to my relief. After getting dressed for school, I went to go check on the boys to make sure they were getting ready.
I checked the younger ones first. Jimin and Tae were already getting dressed, which didn't alarm me, but then I saw Kookie already dressed and packing his stuff into his bag. When I asked if he was alright enough to go to school, he nodded his head silently. "I missed school too much anyways, Melly."
I wish I could say the same thing, sweet child, I thought to myself as I left them to finish getting ready. I then checked on the older kids to see how they were doing. After helping Namjoon find his notebooks and dragging a sleepy Yoongi out of bed, I asked Jin if he was okay to go to school. He shook his head, and I nodded understandingly. "Take as long as you need", I told him.
On my way out, however, he asked, "Can you stay here with me, Mel?"
I stopped. Turning to face him, he immediately tried to take it back. "It's fine, I can stay by my-"
"No, it's fine", I cut him off. "I can stay here, if you need me to."
With that, I called the school and told them I had a family emergency involving Jin and I, told a slightly confused Mina to take the other hybrids to school, and changed back into some pajamas before finding Jin again. "So, what do you want to do?"
"Hmm...can we watch a movie?"
"Sure, which one?", I asked. He went onto Netflix and chose one of his favorite movies. I agreed, and the two of us began watching.
Around ten minutes into the film, I thought I heard a window close. I was a bit confused, because the sound seemed to come from the hallways, but Jin and I were in the den with no one else home, not to mention that none of the windows were open last I saw. Looking at Jin, he seemed unfazed by the noise, so I kept watching with him.
That is, until I heard footsteps passing the den into the kitchen.
Confused, I told Jin that I needed to go to the bathroom before walking towards the noise. I didn't find anything at first so I started to head back, but then I heard something fall, followed by a voice muttering, "Shit."
I walked over to the source, which was coming from the kitchen. Looking in the kitchen, there was an unfamiliar girl standing there, about 13 years old, dressed in clothes about as tattered as Yeji's were when she came in. Even though I had never met her, I could tell just by the fact that she was a snowy owl hybrid that this was the last missing cousin.
She looked startled to see me, so I started by calmly introducing myself. "Hi, I'm Melody, I'm good friends with your cousin Mina. I take it that you must be Lia?"
She said nothing, but nodded her head when I asked.
"I see. Well, the rest of your sisters and your cousins are all at school currently, but they should be back in a few hours. In the meantime, I'm watching a movie with one of my hybrids, but feel free to settle back in and join us whenever you're ready." I told her before walking back to the den. By then, Jin was still engrossed in the film, so I doubt he noticed that I was gone for as long as I was.
"Heads up, if you hear footsteps and it's not me, it's because one of Mina's cousins returned. I suppose she's settling back into the house".
"I hope you guys don't mind me joining in?", a soft voice asked, most likely Lia's. I looked over to confirm, and there she was, in more comfortable-looking clothes.
"Perfectly fine", Jin said simply, eyes still glued to the screen.
Together, the three of us finished the movie. Once the credits started to roll, I asked Jin if he was feeling better.
"I...think I'm doing better compared to how I was yesterday, but I can't lie, I'm not in the best condition", he admits. I nodded. "I definitely don't feel as hopeless anymore...just a bit...I don't know how to put it."
"Scared that you might slip back into it again? Worried that things won't improve?", I asked.
Jin nodded. "A little bit. I'm also scared in general; I don't ever want to face him again..."
"I promise you that you will never see him again. I'm putting a restraining order against him as soon as I can. With that in place, if he tried again, we can put him into jail", I told him.
"You mean that?", he asked. I nodded.
Jin fell asleep soon after. I let him sleep where he was, giving him a blanket and pillow, before turning to Lia. "So, how are you doing? Settling in all nicely?"
"I think so...I was surprised to see that my room was still exactly how I left it. I can tell that the others must not have gone into it too much..."
I think I knew the reason but I didn't want to jump to conclusions so I said nothing.
"Aren't you tired?", I asked her.
Then I took a good look at her. She was looking rather pale, so I put my palm against her cheek. She was burning up quite a bit. I could've sworn her face went red after I retracted my hand, but because of how sick she probably was, I assumed it was just the fever. "I think a fever is kicking in, you should lie down", I told her. She tried to decline, saying that she felt fine, but I'm guessing something didn't sit well in her stomach since she ran to the bathroom without another word.
When she came back, I told her to go into her room. After grabbing a couple of supplies, I followed suit. I placed an ibuprofen by her bedside along with a glass of water, told her to take it and sleep, before leaving the room.
sorry if this turned out uneventful; after a couple chapters of events I decided to let this be a little filler chapter to balance things out a bit.
happy late birthday haechan ^~^
have a great day/night!
