"I have a question for you guys." Calum blurts suddenly, chewing on his lip nervously.
"Okay, so ask." Luke chuckles, the four of them on a zoom call following a meeting with management who had got off nearly an hour ago.
"What do the lyrics to Outer Space mean to you guys, specifically why did the line Nothing like the rain when you're in outer space mean?" He sighs, running his thumb and forefinger over his jaw.
"That was two albums and almost five years ago, Cal, why are you asking now?" Ashton laughs.
"Skye probably said something." Michael smirks.
"I asked her why she loves to watch the sky at night, and what it means to her, and her response was that line from the song. She's told us it's one of her absolute favorites before. But that was all she said. She didn't give me a real answer."
"Maybe she figured you'd wrote and sing the line, you should know what it means." Luke shrugs.
"Ya, to me. But it's a lyric we all know fans have internalized and interpreted in millions of different ways."
"You're not going to know what it means to her until you talk to her, Calum." Mike laughs.
"Ya. But I feel like it is borderline asking how she found 5sos, and that was something she asked us not to ask about."
"It could mean a lot of things, Cal." Ashton smiles weakly. "It could mean missing your small problems when you're dealing with bigger ones. It could mean, wanting the past back. It could be a sign of hope or loss. A change of perspective. You'll never know her take unless you ask her."
"Ya..."
"Hey, things seem to have calmed down after Roy tweeted about Skye being his old friend last week. Are you feeling better about all that at least, Cal? I know you were scared when fans started talking about the idea of you being a dad." Michael changes the subject suddenly.
"Not everyone that saw it believed Roy's tweet. But it helped a little bit and that makes me feel better. There's just a lot going on right now. Nika's existence being known to the world is not something we need to add."
"Agreed." Like nods, "Glad you're calming down about that at least."
"Me too." Calum offers a half smile.
"We should call it a night guys. It's getting late. Cal, if you're going to let this fester, you're going to have to ask. Don't kill yourself over it man." Michael pushes.
"Mike's right. We can talk tomorrow." Luke nods.
"Wildflower is out everywhere now. Can you guys believe it. Haven't seen you boys in person in forever and we are releasing single and an album into this mess." Calum chuckles.
"Our fans need it now more than ever though. We'll talk more about album plans later. Love you guys." Ashton waves quickly before his screen goes black.
"Night guys." Calum nods before disconnecting himself, sitting back in the desk chair, taking a heavy breath. The boys are right, he can't let this question eat him alive. He either has to ask or come to terms with not knowing.
After making sure the computer system is all shut off Calum heads for the stairs, climbing them quietly. He pauses outside the bedroom doors upstairs, hearing someone tossing and turning, sounds of fear or distress coming from behind a door.
