WHENEVER THE BELL rang for Kate's second period class to start, she'd been more than slightly annoyed to find that the boy that had almost hit her car that morning was currently talking to her teacher, Ms. Meyers.
Great.
She sat down next to her lab partner, Stephanie Hunt, who had seemingly been drooling over the blond boy at the front of the classroom. She only watched her for a moment, giving her an unreadable expression. "Steph."
"Hm?" she said, almost as if she'd been snapped awake. She turned to Kate, her eyes widening. "Dude, have you seen the new guy?"
"Yeah, he almost killed Barry," she said simply, referencing to her car Bartholomew.
"Jesus, really?"
"Yeah. Totally seems like your type though."
Stephanie stifled a laugh, shoving Kate slightly as she snickered.
Kate had met Stephanie after Winter Break of her junior year. Her family had moved from Chicago right after the new year holiday, and she hadn't known anyone. However, when she sat next to Kate in English and asked her for a pen, she very quickly adopted her into her own friend group, just as Jessica had done for Kate years before. Stephanie had proven to be a wonderful friend to her, especially after everything that had happened last year. She met her after she and Steve had stopped being friends, so she had been the first person who hadn't looked at her like someone whose puppy had been kicked. Stephanie had even listened to every word she had to say about the situation, and she had seemingly eaten it up—unlike everyone else, it was all new information for her. One of Kate's favorite things about her, however, was that her last name had been right after hers alphabetically in the senior class. It had given her someone other than Steve to sit next to in classes that had alphabetical seating charts, as his last name was the one before hers.
