WHEN KATE HAD woken up the next morning, it had taken her a few seconds to remember she was in Steve's room.
She turned her head to look at where he should've been beside her, just to find that he had gotten up at some point a while ago, the spot beginning to go cold. Without enough time passing for her to have another thought, she heard shuffling downstairs.
Whenever she had made her way down the stairs, following the aroma of pancakes and bacon, she smiled at the sight of him. His hair had been damp still, already fixed up of course, and he'd already gotten dressed for school. As he flipped the pancake, still trying to do it "the cool way," as he'd always so lovingly called it, even when he thought he was alone, he hummed without a care in the world along to the radio, which had been playing "I Want to Break Free" (Kate would have to tell him later that the single edit was not the same thing as the album version). She couldn't tear her eyes away from him as he continued on without any issue. This must've been a normal morning for him.
Whenever he turned around, two plates in hand, he flashed a smile at her. "Morning."
"Morning," she said, snapping out of her gaze.
"I was just about to wake you up," he said, setting the plates down next to each other on the table. "I made pancakes. I know you like them, or at least you used to, so I..." He stopped himself, sighing. "Last night was rough. You deserved pancakes, okay?"
