STEVE HAD SAT with Kate in Jonathan's room for what felt like hours. Whenever they had gotten to the Byers' house, he hadn't left her side, even if she hadn't woken up yet. He didn't want to leave her alone.

Due to the silent nature of the room, he'd been able to hear many things throughout the house. He had heard Joyce sobbing in the room next door, Hopper on the phone with a connection of his (after he'd left him alone with Kate), and the loud silence from everyone else—they were just waiting.

Through all of that, Steve sat with Kate.

He knew it was almost creepy to watch her while she was sleeping, unconscious, whatever she was, but somehow, watching her had made it a little easier for him to breathe. He told himself that Hopper had said it was a better idea if someone stayed in the room with her to watch her anyway, just in case something happened.

He still couldn't get the sounds of her screams out of his head.

After everything that had happened that night, especially to her, Steve never would have expected for her to look so peaceful. It hadn't been how she physically looked, exactly. Her hair stuck to her damp forehead, her skin cold, pale, and sweaty. She looked better now that he had wiped the blood that had caked onto her skin off of her arms and face, specifically her hands where she'd subconsciously tried to stop one of her wounds from bleeding. Even if she still looked terrible, though, she seemed at peace with her eyes closed, unmoving. The muscles in her face had even relaxed, making her look even more peaceful than when she slept normally.
