THE NEXT MORNING, Kate and her father had decided to make French toast for breakfast.
The Hoppers, since moving out to the trailer, had tried to cook as much as they could. It was something that both Kate and her father wished they would have started doing much earlier. It made everything feel a bit more normal, and besides, it gave them an opportunity to talk to one another. Really talk.
Since they'd moved out to the cabin, Kate and her father's relationship had improved drastically. Over the summer, when she wasn't working, she'd even spent time at the station taking calls when Flo hadn't been able to, spending time with him. Her father had turned out not to be near as bad as she thought—her dad, currently, was her best friend, even more so than any friend she had. That being said, they both had invoked an "ask no questions, hear no lies" policy, or at least, something similar. They could both ask all the questions they wanted, but neither of them truly had to answer any of them.
"You and Steve doing anything tonight?" Hopper finally asked.
She almost cringed. "When are me and Steve doing anything ever?"
Hopper sighed. "You know, about a year ago, I couldn't keep the two of you apart. Now you act like he doesn't even exist."
"Well, I guess that's what happens when you forget about your best friend because of a girl," Kate said nonchalantly, almost like it didn't affect her. "He was an asshole, anyway. Only thought with his dick, you know?"
