ONCE STEVE HAD walked out of the locker room, Kate noticed he wasn't exactly amused. "What's wrong?"

"What?"

"You're upset about something, obviously," she said bluntly.

What? I'm not—"

"Don't lie to me."

"I'm not—" Whenever he noticed the pointed look that she was giving him, he sighed. "It's that new kid, Hargrove. He's just getting into my head. Tommy, too, I guess."

"Makes sense. They're both assholes," she replied. "I mean, Billy almost killed my car on Tuesday and he just tried asking me out. Who does that?"

"What?" he asked, giving her a concerned look. She only shrugged in response. "When did that happen?"

"Like five minutes ago. Literally, just before you walked out here," she replied. Whenever he gave her an unreadable look, almost like he was expecting her to go on, she shrugged again. "What? I mean, I said no, obviously. He's disgusting."

He nodded in response. At least she wasn't into Billy. "Hey, not to completely change the subject, but do you know if Jonathan and Nancy were at school today? Or yesterday even? Like, have you seen them at all?"

She hesitated, shaking her head. "No, uh... I haven't seen either of them since yesterday afternoon, I don't think."

Steve sighed. "Great. That's just... great."
