KATE HAD ALREADY chased him outside, calling after him as he walked swiftly to his car.
"Steve," she shouted, trying to get his attention. "Steve!"
"What?" he said, turning to face her as his voice cracked. His eyes were glazed over.
She hesitated, exhaling sharply. "Just... Just wait a minute."
"For what?"
"I just..." Kate paused, taking a deep breath. "Look, I know I may not be the best person to talk to about it, exactly, but... I don't know, it might make it better?"
"What?" he said, his voice brittle. He only stared at her in confusion. He couldn't think of the last time Kate had voluntarily talked to him, and now she was offering to help him with what happened?
"Let me help you," she said, staring at him wide-eyed as she took a step closer to him. "Please."
Steve considered his options. Kate, even if she acted like she wasn't, was the absolute best person to talk to about this type of thing. It was Kate! She knew how to make anything better just by muttering just a few words—at least, that had always worked for him. The only thing that worried him was that maybe Kate was only doing it to be nice, but why would she offer if she wasn't trying to help him? She had to still care about him just a little bit to even volunteer to make him feel better, right?
