AFTER HOPPER HAD pulled every item that belonged in the Byers' shed out and threw it in the yard, Nancy and Steve started to hang tarps to cover the exposed wooden walls inside of it.
The thought process behind this plan was if they covered the shed with tarps, Will wouldn't be able to recognize where he was and tell the Mind Flayer, as they'd started calling it, where they were. Maybe that way they could stall for time, possibly get some information out of him. That meant, however, that they had to completely cover it. They wouldn't take any more unnecessary risks.
Steve wished it could have been Kate in the shed with him instead of Nancy. She somehow would've made stapling tarps to the wall much more fun and exciting, but instead, he and her father both had told her to go lay back down again. Of course, while she hadn't gone back into Jonathan's room like she should have, at least she wasn't on her feet.
Nancy and Steve, however, didn't speak as they hung the tarps, trying their best to get the job done as quickly as possible to avoid the awkwardness between them.
It was obvious that her and Jonathan had been together for the past couple of days, and it was something that Steve couldn't get angry with her for. Steve had made plans to tell Kate he loved her, to possibly go out with her if she felt the same way, and that was after the two days they'd spent together. He couldn't get mad about it because, realistically, he wanted Nancy to be with the guy she really loved. He just didn't want to be alone with her right now.
