STEVE NEVER THOUGHT that he would be the one to officially break up his relationship with Nancy Wheeler, but he knew it was past time to do so. As he approached the Wheelers' home, roses in hand, he knew it was time to officially break off the relationship he fought so hard for in the first place.

Steve had come to the realization after spending so much time with Kate that he didn't love anyone else the way he loved her. She truly was perfect for him, and it had taken him much too long to actually do something about it. Now that he was older, he realized that he had made so many stupid decisions regarding Kate, so many mistakes. He couldn't believe it had taken him so long to realize he was in love with her. For example, if you thought for years that your first kiss was going to be your best friend, you didn't like them like a best friend. He wouldn't let himself make another mistake with her, never again.

He knew for what it was worth, his and Nancy's relationship had been over for a long time, perhaps before it had even truly begun. It was a thought that he had gotten used to, especially because last he'd heard, Jonathan and Nancy had already been together since the Halloween party. Even if they'd never technically broken up, he tried to brush it off. That's why he wanted to talk to Nancy about officially ending their relationship: he didn't want there to be any misunderstanding about anything. Even with all of that in mind, it still somewhat pained him to end something that he'd given up practically everything to have.

Even after everything he'd given up for their relationship, for Nancy, he knew it was for the best: it was his first step to permanently having Kate back, and possibly as even more than a best friend.
