Here's chap 1!! Enjoy!
I'm waiting in the line for my turn to buy a drink as a middle aged man with silver hair comes into the shop. There's a familiarity aura about him but I can't place my finger on why.
"Hello. You're Eraeya Afo, yes?" I nod but keep my body tense as he starts to walk toward me.
"I am. What do you want?" He smiles and holds out his hand. I don't take it and he puts down after he see realises this.
"I'm Darrius Marselle, headmaster at Akarnae. You've heard of Akarnae I assume?" I nod again, now realising why I feel like I know him. Everyone had heard of Akarnae. The great Alexandra Jennings, who saved Medora, was taught in that school. Everyone with a gift was allowed to go to that school.Everyone wanted to go there.
But not me.
I wasn't looking for education or a place where I could harm others. I was looking for answers, for help. I needed a place where I could train my gift without hurting anyone. I needed to find answers about my past, which were a haze of smoke in my mind.
"I'm here to offer you a place among us at Akarnae."
"Thank you, but I don't want it." I cut him off before he can continue. He doesn't seem fazed and it's almost as if he was expecting I would say that.
"I know, I know you don't want to go. But, can I borrow a small amount of your time and try to convince you to come? I'll shout you a drink and maybe a small cake." I think about it. I didn't have anything I needed to do, nowhere to go and nothing better to do with my time. I sigh but nod.
Marselle smiles at me and I try being pleasant, giving him a small one in return.
///
"Will you come?" Marselle and I had had a good talk about why I should go to Akarnae. Most of his points were good, but none seemed to jump out at me.
"I don't think so. All the things you mentioned, they're great and all, but I don't think I need them. I've survived out here, alone for all this time without needing anyone or anything much. So no. I won't be going to Akarnae. But thank you for your time." I stand up to leave.
Marselle smiles up at me and shakes his head sadly.
"I really thought you'd come. But it is the student's choice to come or not. So, thank you for your time." He stands up and since he's a good height taller than me, I have to now look up at him. I nod before starting to walk away. I didn't get far before he called out to me again, stopping me in my tracks.
"We teach our students how to control their gifts and our Library holds many answers that even I do not have the answer to. If those other things didn't convince you, I hope this does. We need strong people like you at Akarnae, people who've seen more than they should have, in this world and others." I pause before turning around and glaring at him.
"You saved that. You saved that part as a last resort didn't you. You knew that's what might push me over the edge and join your school." I'm quiet when I say that but loud enough for him to hear me. When I turn to face him, he doesn't give me any indication that I was wrong. But he doesn't give me a sign that I was right either. Sighing, I walk back to him.
I'm irritated to say the least. But if that school holds any way for me to learn to control my gift without hurting others and or a way to find out about this smokey haze of a past, I'm in.
I blow a strand of my black hair out of my face in annoyance.
"When does the term start?"
