"hey um, we have to go back now. your dad just called," jaehyun said.
"why do you sound so worried out of a sudden? is everything okay?" i asked.
"eunji is on the way home," he replied softly.
i looked up to see him. will everything be okay? i've never felt this scared before. will jaehyun be okay? will i be okay?
"let's go back home. don't worry, i'll be here with you," he held onto my hand gently and we slowly walked back home.
"you know, no matter what happens, i'll protect you. i promised your dad, and i made a promise to you. i won't go anywhere this time," he smiled.
"please don't leave me this time," i whispered.
"are you ready?" jaehyun asked as we reached home.
at the count of three, jaehyun and i opened the door together. as we entered the house, a woman with long black-jet hair was back-facing us as she was having a conversation with father. i glanced at jaehyun, and he looked back at me. this was it.
"they're here," father told her.
she turned around to face jaehyun and i. my eyes widened. i kept looking at jaehyun, who appeared to be equally nervous.
"hello, jaehyun, it's been awhile," she said as she patted his shoulder.
he flinched at his touch, "hello, lee eunji," he greeted eunji politely while still gripping onto my hand.
she came to my direction. she scanned me twice. eunji gave a smile, a smile which i couldn't decipher. "you must have heard a lot about me. jiwoo, i'm sorry for what i've done. i really mean it. i hope we can start a fresh. i heard you lost your memories. i'll help you, jiwoo. i really want us to get along," eunji sobbed as she knelt down on her knees.
i looked at father and my step-mother. the remorse in their eyes were perfectly reflected, the sense of regret for raising a daughter just like her. i looked at jaehyun, who then looked at me with pitiful eyes. i looked back at eunji, who was sniffling and still on her knees, begging for my forgiveness.
"get up," i said coldly.
jaehyun, father and my step-mother were shocked. i bet they didn't expect that from me. jaehyun looked at me. i stared back at him. this is between my sister and me, i don't have anything to lose.
"jiwoo, just forgive your sister already. she has learnt her lesson.." my step-mother said.
"eomma, are you sure?" i scoffed, arising tension in the room.
"jiwoo, please! i'm really sorry!" eunji wailed as she clutched onto my ankle.
was she putting on a show? i honestly couldn't tell. she held onto my ankle until as if there was no tomorrow.
"i won't eat, drink or sleep until you forgive me," eunji added.
was she desperate for forgiveness? did eunji really mean it? i sighed. my head began to hurt, my heart rate gradually increased.
"jiwoo.." father whispered.
after hesitating, i let go of jaehyun's grip and crouched to match eunji's height. i held her chin carefully. "my dear sister, you reap what you sow. you can go on starving for days and sleepless for nights. don't expect me to forgive you so easily. not after what you have done," i stood up and kicked her arm away before proceeding to my room.
as i slammed the door, i heard eunji shouting from downstairs as she called out for my name repeatedly. i chuckled. why would she do such a thing? i lied down on my bed. shortly after, heavy footsteps overwhelmed me. i grunt. i opened the door to see eunji outside my room.
"you just like to get on my nerves, don't you?" eunji rebuked.
