The market is crowded even before eight and Millie has taken Justin home because he kept crawling under tables and getting lost. I smile watching as Anna and Audrey have a go on the mechanical bull that arrived shortly after we had made our first round of the stalls.
"So you dating now?" Spencer asks Henry nodding towards Anna who blows him a kiss before she jumps on the bull. Audrey happily cheers for her on the sidelines.
"Yeah, we sort of made it official after prom."
"Gross man I didn't need the details." Spencer says with a scrunched nose, pretending to gag.
"Not like that you idiot!" Henry says shoving him "I asked her to be my girlfriend officially after prom."
"Oh," Spencer says with a laugh " and then did the nasty."
"Is someone feeling sexually frustrated?" Henry asks Spencer "Cameron isn't that your issue to take care of?"
I chuckle as Spencer splutters that this isn't about him. " I don't think I will get very far, he calls it the' nasty'." We are both dying of laughter as Spencer huffs and storms off to where Audrey is cheering Anna on. He says something to her and she spins around to look at us raising her eyebrows before slinging her arm around Spencer in comfort. Riling him up is really so much fun.
"When are you two going to make it official?" Henry asks once we have sobered up and Declan has joined us, he seems just as interested in the answer. I shrug.
"Supposedly last week but then all the shit happened so I am waiting for the right time."
"Meanwhile twisting Spencer's Knickers in a knot with anticipation." Declan says with a snort and I furrow my eyebrows.
"He said he was fine with waiting a little longer."
"Because despite appearance he is a nice person," Declan says, we watch as Anna convinces him he has to try the bull. " And he is all shy like a little duck since this would be his first relationship."
"Really?" I ask shocked, since he seems like the type of guy who draws many people in easily. I was sure he had left a trail of broken hearts.
Henry and Declan nod "We always suspected, you know, his preference but he never seemed interested before then you turned up and literally shifted his world."
"Don't give me too much credit." I say feeling my throat all tight as said person smiles in my direction before he gets thrown off the bull unceremoniously. "So you saying I should ask him sooner?"
"I am saying that you two should stop beating around the bush and you should have asked him yesterday." Declan says with a chuckle " But just know that if you break his heart I will break your face."
"Yes, sir." I say standing up and heading over to Spencer, he is flustered from the joys of bull riding "Feel like heading over to pick out Christmas sweaters with me?" He nods and I smile, leading him away with an arm tossed around his shoulder. "How do you feel about matching sweaters?" I ask holding up the butt of a reindeer and the other one with the head.
"Lame, especially since you are like ten times taller."
"Well I was thinking for my aunt and uncle..."
"Oh," He says with pink cheeks and I laugh "You are mean."
"Sorry, you walked into that one," I smile down at all the options "But seriously which one? I have never been Christmas sweater shopping before."
"Never?"
"Never." Spencer nods seriously then acts like a professional shopper to try and find me the perfect Christmas sweater, commenting that this is the first time I am going to be wearing colour, which is probably true. Once that task is done and I have sweaters for everyone in my family we decide to head over to get some hot chocolate as it is definitely cold. Drinking it on a bench to the side we watch everyone walks around, enjoying the Christmas spirit and jolliness of this small towns get togethers.
"So I realised something." I starts, breaking the silence and he glances over at me, nose red from the wind and lips equally pink. "That there really is no perfect time to ask this as life is full of little unexpected things and I do still want to take you out but with the Christmas play coming up and rehearsals everyday I realize there isn't going to be a lot of time and I do not want to waste that time by beating around the bush." He listens intently. I smile, reaching down and grabbing his gloved hand in mine. "So Spencer Rue, will you do me the honor of becoming my boyfriend?"
I watch as his eyes lights up and his cheeks burst with colour and he nods, letting out a chuckle "Okay." I am sure my grin is just as goofy as I lean in a little closer and do something that I have wanted to do for a very long time now. His lips are soft and warm from the hot chocolate and I smile into the kiss, feeling right for the first time in a long time. This, with him feels right.
