Chapter 5

Everyone was unfamiliar. Nobody knew each other, yet he's wondering how the other kids managed to talk to each other like they've known them for ages.

He could only sigh and stare at his shoes. He wasn't really an outgoing kid since he's the only child in his family. And to make the situation more complicated, his family isn't even his biological one since he spent most of his childhood years at the orphanage.

"Hey, tall kid!" A girl approached him while pulling her bag. His heart sped up. It was his first day in school and someone's about to beat him up. He has watched this scene from countless of dramas before, and he can't help but be nervous.

He was finally facing the girl, but instead of a punch or a push, he was greeted with a smile. "You're new here, right? I didn't see you here last year..." She giggled and extended her arm. "I'm Lee Haejin. Just call me Haejin."

With pure hesitation and confusion, he shook her hand. "Jaemin..." He suddenly forgot the surname his adoptive family uses. "N-Na Jaemin..."

"It wasn't that difficult to make friends, right Jaemin?" She was still smiling, and Jaemin swears that he would melt any second.

"F-Friends?"

"Mhm!" She nodded and sat beside him. "From now on, we're friends, Jaemin-ah!" Jaemin was pretty sure that he's a little older than Haejin basing on how she talks, but who cares? Definitely not him because finally having someone to talk to is nice.

"You alright?" Haejin sees Jaemin alone at the bench again. She suddenly remembers their first meeting. It was exactly the same. And she wonders why he's alone again when he had gained lots of friends already.

Jaemin looked at her and smiled weakly, "Oh hey..." He then patted the space beside him, gesturing her to sit beside him.

"Is everything alright?" She handed him a can of soda and he gladly took it, thanking her in the process. "You look pale, have you eaten?"

He shook his head, "I was thinking..."

"Of what?" She asked and started to eat the sandwich she bought from the cafeteria.

"Dad was hospitalized yesterday... and I can't help but worry..." He opened the can of soda and took a sip from it. "I'm really worried because he's been sick the past week... and it hurts because I feel like I can't do anything for him... what hurts even more is that..." He sighed and looked at the sky.

"I feel even more stupid because he's not my biological father..."

Haejin pressed her lips to a thin line. It was the first time that he said something about his family in their almost 7 years of friendship.

Jaemin started tearing up, "That's why I... I-I'm really worried, Haejin-ah..." He looked at her, and it was the first time she saw him cry. "I can't lose him too..."

She hugged the taller, "Think positive... nothing's gonna happen..."
