The long line of scantily dressed girls and boys in flashy costumes streaming down the street, told us where the party was at. I wore harem pants with combat boots, fake dog tags, a t-shirt with a pleather strip down the front, and a very durable hunter green vest. I had tucked my ring-daggers in one of the many pockets of my nylon vest and wore dramatic dark make-up. I looked ridiculous. I had been going for a samurai look, but it sort of fell apart when I didn't have a cool mask or any type of armor. Fortunately, being post-apocalyptic meant we didn't have to stick to any real theme. Marnie wore a pretty good replica of what Kate Beckinsale wore in the Underworld movies with spandex, tall boots, and a trench coat. Scarlet wore cargo pants, combat boots, and a slashed wife-beater. The others all had random articles of camo, Damien and Milo had bullet-proof vests, and Cassidie wore a tight dress that had so many slashes that it looked like strips of fabric and not an article of clothing.

I ignored the looks we got for walking up to the front where the line started. My group fell behind me as I approached the large, heavy-built doorman. I glanced back to see five nervous faces gulping behind me and then looked the man in the face. To my surprise, there was a little smile on his face and he waited for me to speak.

"Jack invited us." I said summoning courage. He nodded politely and opened the big black door long enough for us to slip in. My group was aghast that we were let in and beside themselves with excitement as we entered the huge dark room. The neon-colored lights fell like rain on the huge mass of dancers. It smelled strongly of smoke and Vampyres. This made me so anxious I didn't move right away. There was a long, horse-shoe shaped bar on the right and several lounge couches set on platforms to the left, on either side of the DJ's space. Lavish red curtains covered the windows to keep out the city lights and colors danced across everything including the awed faces of my friends. The walls were decorated with golden Baroque filigree and the gothic ceiling arched up into darkness. I was having a hard time deciding if it was someone's mansion or a rented out venue.

I felt the shiver of excitement from my group before Marnie grasped Scarlet and Damien and immersed them into the crowd with her. Cassidie and Milo melted away into a different direction, leaving me alone to search for Jack.

As someone came in the black door behind me, I slipped out of the way and found Jack. He had already been making his way towards me along the wall. Suddenly, I was shoved forward by a cold elbow and I turned around to see Amber.

"What the hell?!" I roared at her, pushing her away, with claws emerging from my fingertips momentarily. Jack appeared behind me and pulled me back, effortlessly, as Amber's friends held her back as well. I saw the blood from my scratches down Amber's arm and felt poignant satisfaction. I could tell her and her cronies were all vampyres.

"Dèja-vu." Jack said calmly into my ear. He had a smile in his voice as he led me away from her to one of the platforms near the DJ. I dropped onto the bright red couch and Jack held himself over me, looking down at me with something like exhilaration, the lights dancing in his sharp eyes.

"What's the matter?" he asked, tilting his head.

"The smell is making me nervous." I said, referring to the Vampyres and the smoke.

"Oh," he seemed to understand. "It's okay. You're with me. No one will bother us." I kissed him for a minute, letting my problems disappear gradually.

"I'm sorry," I whispered before they were completely gone. I didn't want to let my guard down here. The place was overflowing with Vampyres and my little human friends were running around somewhere unprotected.

"Do you want to find somewhere else?" he asked.

"Jack!" I heard a crisp, commanding voice from behind the couch. It was a girl. He sat up.
