I resisted Wolfgang's urgings for me to eat humans. I worried about it changing me. I didn't want to feel any more isolated from my human friends. I already felt like I could barely live with my mother. I barely saw her and I struggled to seem normal when I did. She had been making me eat dinner with her more often and I knew it was because I was still losing weight. Jack had noticed as well, but he didn't really say anything. I wondered what he thought.
"Silver, we need to talk!" my mom said, turning off the TV and approaching me when I got home after staying late at school to get work done in the library. I didn't say anything. I was glum after looking over all my bad tests from the end of the previous semester. I joined her at the table and her worried blue eyes pierced into mine. Her expression was a mix of concern and outrage and I was suddenly super worried she found some blood-soaked clothes or some of Jack's clothes in my room. I had been a little sloppier when hunting lately and wasn't sure how well I had been hiding it.
"Are you doing drugs?" she enunciated slowly and seriously with her eyebrows pushing down darkly over her eyes. I could tell she was trying not to sound mad because she wanted me to be open and tell her something like that.
"No, mom." I said sincerely shaking my head in emphasis.
"Then what's the matter with you?" she asked softly, seeming to regret her phrasing. "Why won't you eat?" she asked, sounding frustrated.
"I'm just not hungry." I lied, feeling the pain in my stomach and looking away from her.
"Maybe you need to go to the doctor." She cried, her eyes going far away in worry.
"Mom, I'll be fine. I'm just a little stressed. I'll figure it out."
"You need to start eating or I'll take you to the doctor." She warned. I just nodded and got up from the table and went to my room. I heard her sigh after I closed the door and I threw my bag down.

The news came in the form of a group text from Cassidie. She said a girl at our school had died of an overdose of some kind and I recognized the name as one of Amber's cronies, Alaina.
They're doing a drug inspection at school today I bet. Damien typed urgently, warning Milo and Cassidie in particular.
"Hey, guys." I murmured, as I joined them at the table just as the bell rang for us to go to homeroom. There was a heavy blanket of quietness that seemed to lay over the school and it reminded me of the one that used to follow me and my group around. Nina eyed me suspiciously when I entered homeroom and took my usual seat. She had moved herself to a different seat as far as she could get away from me and I ignored her dark brown eyes that burrowed into me from across the room.
You guys! I think it was hawthorn. She's a vampire! Marnie typed to me and Scarlet making my eyebrows furrow.
You mean someone poisoned her?? I asked, as a picture was sent from Marnie's phone of Alaina's body lying on the floor in front of some lockers. She looked paler than usual and her blue eyes were stuck in place looking off behind the camera. I had to close my eyes and put my phone down to resist the urge to think of Alex. I was glad his picture wasn't circulated around the school and wondered for a fleeting moment if his death had anything to do with Vampyres or Lycans.
It didn't take long into second period before everybody was freaking out about the drug search. The adrenalin in the air was making my stomach growl. I could feel every single persons' blood pounding through their veins and I felt like I was going to burst. I had to keep the rubber-bands in place to keep from changing and I struggled to hold my breath so I didn't look like I was breathing harder than necessary since I was just sitting in my seat with my hands pressed over my burning eyes.
