CHAPTER FOURTEEN
THE FINAL STRAW.
VERONA SAT QUIETLY IN A CHAIR NEXT TO THE COUCH RIO WAS CURRENTLY STILL UNCONSCIOUS ON. Her foot tapped anxiously against the ground, impatiently waiting for him to wake up. The guilt in her chest never left, the betrayal Rio's eyes held never leaving her mind. Even though he had double-crossed her and told everyone who she really was, she still didn't feel right about doing the same to him. The idea of vengeance didn't sit well with her. She knew that if he would've walked out those doors, Tokyo would have no problem with ratting the rest of them out. Nothing would be holding her back. With Rio in there with them, there was no way she would screw them over-- at least that was what she tried convincing herself of.The blonde girl placed the back of her hand onto his forehead, checking his temperature. He wasn't burning up, which was a relief to her. Nairobi rubbed the spot where he had been injected with a cotton ball, cleaning the area. The older woman gave her a small smile, to which Verona forced one onto her face in return. Berlin ran a hand over his face, as he glanced down at the young boy. Nairobi stood up, taking a few steps closer to Berlin, about to spark up a conversation.
"Watch him," He ordered the woman, beginning to walk away from the couch. "Verona, come with me." He gestured for the younger girl to walk with him, but she didn't make an effort to get out of the chair. She didn't want to leave Rio's side.
"I didn't sign up to be anyone's nurse." Nairobi responded, annoyed by the older man's request. "Nor to put up with little speeches or have fucking therapy sessions." She threw the used cotton ball onto the group, taking long strides towards him. "I kept my fucking mouth shut to avoid fucking things up more than they already were."
"I'll watch him." Verona chimed in, but her words went ignored by the both of them.
"How nice of you to worry about the group." Berlin deadpanned, glancing at the woman briefly.
"You know what I'm worried about? The Professor, Berlin." Nairobi corrected, voicing her concerns for the man who they hadn't heard from in almost a day. "He's not around. Just you. And he's the head of all this."
"It's precisely for that reason that he mapped out a perfect plan. And it's the one we're going to follow. Step-by-step without straying from it!" He raised his voice at her, growing agitated by the amount of times every one kept undermining his authority.
"You've already strayed from it! You turned Tokyo in." Nairobi reminded him, cocking her head to the side and raising her eyebrows. He seemed to only care about the rules when it came down to the rest of the group following them.
"Tokyo will get her share if she behaves and stays quiet." Berlin affirmed, and started to walk away, but Nairobi angrily grabbed his arm.
"Bullshit! That was supposed to be if she was arrested, not turned in and rolled down the stairs to the lions, like a dog." The older woman fumed, jabbing her finger into his chest. "And now that she's pissed off, she's probably already talked. And the SOGs are probably in the hanger digging another tunnel to get in here." Her words were filled with rage and resentment.
