CHAPTER NINE
EUPHORIA.
THE LEAD INSPECTOR WAS GOING TO BE ALLOWED INTO THE ROYAL MINT TO MAKE SURE ALL THE HOSTAGES WERE ALIVE AND WELL. For the most part, they had taken very good care of the hostages-- making sure they were fed, had water, and able to deal with basic hygiene. The only hostage that had been badly hurt on their end, was Mónica Gaztambide, but it was a relief that she was still alive. The three people in the group whose identities were public, including Tokyo, Rio, and Berlin, were there to greet her at the entrance. They checked for any type of device on the older woman, whether it be a camera or a microphone, making sure she didn't sneak anything in. They realized early on that you could never trust the police.Verona and Florence stood in front of the hostages, closely watching over them. The two of them would sneak glances at each other every once and awhile, which always went unnoticed by the other, since they now had masks covering their faces. A third of the group already had their identity known by the public, and that was the last thing Verona wanted for herself.
Verona had felt a shift in their friendship the past day, feeling like she could in some ways trust him again. Although, she still felt very hesitant to tell him most things. She still found him very unpredictable with where his loyalties lied, and couldn't be too sure on whether he would switch sides on her again.
One-by-one, the hostages were led down the stairs, where they stood in front of Inspector Murillo and Berlin. Inspector Murillo made sure that the hostages were alive and well, writing down some notes on a pad of paper. They were making sure to waste the inspectors time by dragging out the process slowly. The plan relied on stealing the police's time, by driving them to dead-ends and filling them with lies.
"Verona, here, has been taking very good care of them." Berlin complimented, gesturing over to the young girl. Inspector Murillo looked towards her, eyeing her curiously. She couldn't see much since a mask was covering her features, but she could sense a form a familiarity towards the girl-- even though all she could really see was a small chunk of her blonde hair and her height. Murillo felt like she knew her from somewhere, but couldn't pinpoint it.
Verona took notice of the look she had on her face, and quickly excused herself. She walked back up the staircase, heading towards her original post.
As she was walking to one of the rooms that held a few of the hostages, she heard hushed whispers coming from inside. Her eyes narrowed slightly, and she put her ear to the door. She wasn't able to hear anything but muffled voices, so she opened the door quietly. Arturo was leaned over Alison Parker, seeming to be having an urgent conversation with the young girl.
"Step away from the girl." Verona commanded, taking the time to move the Dalí mask from off of her face. Arturo immediately rushed away from Alison, back to his spot against the other wall.
