CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
UNEXPECTED EVENTS.
HUNDRED & THREE HOURS INTO HEISTBERLIN HAD NOW REGAINED BACK HIS THRONE OF POWER, AFTER NAIROBI DECIDED THE JOB WAS TOO STRESSFUL ON HER. The patriarchy was unfortunately back in motion. After the stunt the hostages had pulled, Berlin was going to force them to work extra hard-- no breaks for eating or sleeping. They would work day and night to keep them busy. They would have no time to calculate a new escape plan that would most likely end up failing again anyways. The group had been reasonable with them, which only led to the hostages to spit right back in their faces. It was time to show them who was really in charge. And Berlin was definitely going to do a good job at that.
Verona had the phone up to her ear, listening as the line continued to ring. Her foot tapped at a quick pace against the ground, antsy as she waited for the Professor to answer it. The line ended, so she decided to call one more time, even though she probably wouldn't get an answer. Her assumption was right as the line went dead once again. She guessed that he must be tying up more loose ends. A sigh slipped past her lips, as she rubbed a hand across her face. She placed the phone back down onto the table, the room filling with silence once again.
The blonde girl exited the office, and headed to the main corridor of the Royal Mint, where Arturo was currently sat down in a chair, the two kilos of explosives still strapped to him. Her eyes landed on Rio, who was currently watching the older man. Rio gave her a small smile, which she ignored, turning her attention back to the human bomb. The younger boy's face dropped, but he quickly composed himself. Although, Arturo seemed to catch on.
"Trouble in paradise?" Arturo whispered to Rio, low enough so that Verona couldn't hear him. Rio's eyes scrunched up, a puzzled look clouding his face. "Caught between two different women? I can give you some advice." The older man continued. Rio grabbed his backpack from off the floor, taking out a tablet. After pressing a few buttons, the detonator on Arturo's chest started blinking red and beeping loudly. A wide smile formed on Rio's face, as Arturo seemed to visibly pale.
Verona looked over, noticing what was happening. Her lips twisted up slightly at the sight of Arturo shaking in fear. Rio placed the tablet back into his backpack, the amusement never leaving his face. The blonde girl walked over to Rio, squatting down so that her face was leveled with his.
"I'll take over." She offered, needing to distract her mind from the fact that the Professor wasn't answering the phone. Rio raised his eyebrows in response, but soon nodded, knowing she wasn't going to elaborate. He left the room, leaving her with a panicky Arturo. Verona sat down onto the wooden chair, eyes glaring at the man in front of her. He seemed to shift uncomfortably under her vacant gaze.
"I know who you are." Arturo began, swallowing his fear of the girl in front of him. Verona tilted her head to the side, the look on her face not shifting. "I knew you looked familiar, and then I realized, you're Emiliano Vasquez's daughter. I've seen you on the news." He added, and the young girl felt her whole body stiffen, which he noticed and decided to continue on. "Your picture was all over the news a couple months ago. The media said you were missing."
