She lay in bed, her eyes wide open and full of tears. She had just woken up for the fourth time from the same nightmare she has every time she sleeps. She decided to stop trying for the night as she had had enough. The clock barely read 11 pm and she knew the night would be long; it always was. She tossed and turned and eventually fell asleep and her nightmare started again.
--------------------------------------------
"(Y/n)!"
She turned around at the sound of her name, looking at her mother and father being dragged away. She held her arm out, but her chains held her back.
"BRING THEM BACK!"
"You won't get them back until your training is complete."
She was then dragged away by her chains linked to her arms and legs, screaming at the top of her lungs the entire time. She kept screaming louder and louder as she was pulled further from her parents and it was then that her powers were awoken. She felt a strange surge of energy and the men around her disintegrated before her eyes, as did the chains. She ran to her parents, but they were gone. The chains they were in lay covered in blood. She dropped to her knees and cried for what felt like hours. Police arrived soon and saw her holding the chains close to her heart. They walked over to her asking what happened.
"I want my parents back!"
"What happened to them?"
"I want them back!"
As she screamed the surge returned and the police melted into the ground below them, puddles of blood where their feet once were. She then realized she was the reason they died. The neighbors that saw ran inside and more police cars appeared on the scene. She did her best to calm down, but she was only a child.
"GET AWAY FROM ME!"
She cried out and the cars were flung into the air and away from her. She felt a hand on her back and everything went black.
--------------------------------------------
She sat up, panting and sweating in her bed again. She gripped at the sides of her head trying to stop herself from crying. She had the same nightmare of her parents' death every single time she went to sleep.
Eventually, light from the rising sun leaked into her room. She got up and walked to her living room to get breakfast. It's been almost sixteen years since (Y/n) lost her parents and there haven't been any incidents since she learned how to use her powers and what they did. She felt her snake crawl over her foot as he explored the apartment. It was Saturday so she didn't have work. She finished breakfast and collapsed on the couch. Turning on the tv and scrolling through channels until the news caught her attention.
"It's been four years since the previously known, 'Charles Xavier School' was changed to 'Jean Grey School' and they have yet to explain why. Until today. It was stated by Charles himself that it was changed in loving memory of Jean Grey who sacrificed herself to protect the other students and what seems to be the world."
(Y/n) rested her head against the back of her cushion and watched her snake roam around. When she looked back, Hank McCoy, also known as Beast, was being interviewed, "It's absolutely terrible, but she made the choice herself and she protected all of us. And we finally want to open the school to new mutants. Anyone who wants to do good with their powers and help others." She zoned out a bit and thought about it. Just then, there was a knock at her door. She went to answer it.
"Hi, (Y/n)? (Y/n) (L/n)?"
"Yes... who are you?"
"My name is Peter Maximoff."
"You're Quicksilver?"
"Indeed I am."
"What are you doing here? How did you find my address?"
"That's not exactly important. I'm here on a mission."
"Okay, well how can I help?"
"I'm looking for a girl with extraordinary power and I was told you might know where to find her."
"Oh, well you're out of luck. That girl died when her parents did."
"Are you-"
"I haven't used my powers since I learned to control them and I don't intend on using them ever again. Whether for good or not."
"Listen, I know you've been through a lot, but we can help you."
"Look I'm sure you think you can, but my answer is no."
"Would you maybe reconsider with some persuasion?"
Another voice sounded and Peter moved to the side. Charles moved forward in his wheelchair and looked up at (Y/n).
"There isn't anything-"
"You have nightmares every night, do you not?"
She froze, every fiber in her body tensing and she wanted to slam the door. She swallowed hard and took a deep breath.
"I said no, I thought you didn't affiliate yourself with the school anymore."
"I just help in the searches."
"Well, you better go look somewhere else. My answer is no."
She shut the door and locked it, walking back to the couch. As she did her snake came up onto the couch with her and transformed into his human form.
"You should go with them."
"You need to be a snake and not a person, Jaedon.."
"You know I only do this if I need to tell you something or need to catch you. They can help you, (Y/n)."
"I said no, I'm fine."
"You collapsing everywhere every few minutes is not fine, my friend."
"They're probably gone anyway."
"No, they're still there and listening."
"Ugh. What do I gain?"
"Restful nights and a purpose, to help."
