As you know there's the pogues and kooks, in outerbanks NC. I fall into the pogue category. My dad left when I was a kid, and my mom is always working so it's really just me alone all the time. Well except when I'm with my friends, JJ, John B, Pope, and my best friend Kiara.
"Y/n let's go!" I heard John B yell as I sat at the kitchen counter. Just about every day we'd go to the marsh and hang out.
"Hey boys." I smiled and ran towards the end of my dock and hopped on the boat. "And Kiara." I smiled giving her a hug.
"What's the plan for today? I gotta be home at 7 tonight to babysit." I mentioned sitting on the bow of the boat.
"Don't worry princess we'll get you home on time." JJ smirked at me. That was the issue with him and I. We would always flirt, and be touchy but nothing ever happened between us. No pogue on pogue macking! It was the first day of summer, school had just finished yesterday, and all I hope is that JJ and I become more then friends this summer.
As we pulled into a random spot in the marsh the boys swam around while kie and I ate pretzels on the boat. "So who are you babysitting later?" Kie asked me.
"Kelly smiths kid, her names Ava." Kelly smith was a kook, one of the nicest and that's why a lot of people new her. Well that and her only daughter Ava was the cutest kid you'd ever seen. The blond hair, blue eyes, the cutest laugh and best hugs a kid could give ya. Kie said nodded and we continued watching the boys try to drown each other.
Kie broke the silence again by asking about JJ. "Are you gonna try with JJ this year? I've been waiting girl!" She chuckled and took a drink of her beer. I blushed.
"I don't know what your talking about." I said. I never told anyone about my crush on JJ. I know, no secrets among pogues, but this was something that could ruin everything.
"I see the way you look at him. And I see the way he looks at you. He calls you princess, and he'll always go right to you no matter what we're doing." She said. He does not do any of that.
I laughed at her. "No he doesn't, he calls me princess because I'm the pogue princess." I smirked at her. It was always a joke with her and I, which was the pogue princess. She rolled her eyes playfully.
"You girls gonna tan all day or what?" John B yelled interrupting kie and I conversation.
"Hell no!" Kie yelled getting up and jumping in, me following her actions.

"Guys let's go I gotta get home." I yelled to them. We've been out here for hours, but I have to get home to babysit.
"We're coming, we're coming." JJ said from in the water. Pope and I have been sitting in the boat trying to dry off for a while, as the others kept swimming.

"Thanks John B, see ya tomorrow?" I asked the group as I stood on my dock.
"Bright and early!" Pope joked. They new I hated being up before 10am. I rolled my eyes and went up the dock to go inside.
"Y/n I'll be home around the 'am, dinner is in the fridge but I assume you'll eat at the smiths. Have fun babysitting Ava!"
My mom did this all the time. She was always making sure I was ok, and that I had food and money, but she would either work late or go to the bars for hours on end. She'll find a guy to pay for her drinks and spend hours with him. As long as she didn't miss important days and holidays I really didn't care what she did. I sighed after reading the note and went to shower. I had about an hour before I needed to be there.

"Y/n it's good to see you! Ava is in the living room, she really wants to go outside so make sure she's got bug spray on if ya do. I'll be back around 9pm, thank you so much again." Kelly said. Her and her husband, Mike, go out on dates every month and today was date night.
"It's no problem I love watching her, you guys have fun." I said and watched them walk out of the house. Their house wasn't as big as Sara Cameron's but it was much bigger then mine. It had a big backyard that wasn't fenced in due to the dock that was off in the water behind the house.
"Ava!" I called walking further into the house.
"Y/n! Can we go outside!" She yells as I see her get up and come give me a hug. I've watched her for about 2 years now, and every time she gets excited to see me.
"Of course lets put spray on." I said and we went off.
I sat in the sand on a towel as she built sandcastles in the little beach they had outback. The sun wouldn't set until about 8:30 so we had enough sunlight to be outside.
"Y/n?" I heard someone call my name behind me. Ava and I both looked up confused.
"JJ?" I asked as a figure came into view.
"Hey guys, ya it's me." He said walking up to us.
"What are you doing here?" I asked him standing up. Ava came over to me and hid behind my legs. She was the cutest child on this island but also the most shy.
"I um. John B was busy." He started to say but I new what he was gonna say. He didn't wanna go home because of his dad, and my mom won't let him in our house by himself (and he respected that rule).
"Oh well do you wanna stay here with me? I'm done in a few hours?" I asked cutting him off.
He looked very glad to hear that. "Ya, thanks. So who's this?" He smiled and knelt down to avas height. I looked down at them and watched her cower behind me more.
"JJ this is Ava, Ava this is JJ, he is my best friend." I said and knelt down with them.
"Hi Ava." He smiled. "You want help building that sand castle?" He asked her. Her eyes lit up and she smiled. Grabbing his hand she pulled him away to the sandcastle she was trying to build. I couldn't stop looking at JJ. He had this tough shell he put on, but watching him with kids was the sweetest thing to ever see.
"Y/n help us!" I heard avas high voice yell to me. I smiled and moved over to them.
"Were gonna build a bridge here." She said pointing to a spot in the sand and gave me a shovel.
"So Ava is y/n your favorite?" JJ asked her while building up sand.
She smiled big, "yes! She always lets me a have cookies after dinner." Ava smiled at him and I. He laughed.
"How come I don't get cookies?" He asked me.
"You have to eat all your dinner and help clean up to get cookies." Ava said interrupting. I smiled at her.
"That's right." I said.

"Come on lets go inside, you gotta go to bed." I said to Ava brushing the sand off my legs and hands.
"No! Please a little longer?" She asked with her hands in the sand pouting.
"Sorry girlie but no. You still gotta take a bath." I said picking her up.
"JJ!" She yelled as he was standing up brushing the sand off himself.
"What?" He asked confused.
"Can he carry me?" Ava asked. I nodded and let her down.

"Ducky?" I asked Ava as she sat in the tub. She nodded taking the duck from me. She had mermaids and ducks floating in the tub with her.
After washing her up, I got her dressed and in bed. "What book do you want tonight?" I asked her as we shard her small bed. She grabbed the princess and the frog book, one we've read many times. JJ showed up in the doorway. "Can you read?" Ava asked him.
"You want JJ to read to you?" I asked her. She just nodded and held the book in her lab. I sighed and got up. "Can you read to her tonight? It's just one book, and she'll fall asleep in the middle of it." I told him.
"Oh ya that's fine. Not sure if I'll do any good." He said with a nervous laugh.
"It's fine just give some emotion you know?" I chuckled. I left her room and sat down on the couch. This JJ was my favorite. Seeing him do so well and be helpful made my heart beat faster.
"She's asleep." I heard JJ say after a few minutes. He sat down on the couch next to me.
"Did your dad so something today? Is that why you didn't wanna go home?" I asked him. He just shook his head.
"Last night I stayed at home, and woke up to him yelling at me and I didn't wanna deal with it anymore." He said, his eyes got a little watery. I pulled him into my chest.
"You've got me, all the time." I told him and kissed his hair.
"You'd be a great mom by the way. I'm not just saying that because of Ava but like right now, my own mom, before she ran off, would always kiss my hair when I got sad and let me cuddle with her." He said looking down at his lap.
"I'm sorry JJ." I said and hugged him tighter.
"Thank you...for what you said about me. I can't wait till I got my own family." I smiled while still holding him close. He pulled away from my hug, only to be inches from my face.
"Can I be apart of that family?" He asked. I nodded with a small smile.
"You'll be a great dad." I mumbled to him. He just nodded and I watched his eyes flick down to my lips then back down to my eyes.
"Kiss me." I whispered. He wasted no time and crashed his lips on mine.
After a good minute I pulled away, I needed air.
"Screw that rule." He said and pulled me back in for another kiss. This is what I've waited all summer for.
