Thirteen year old Ruby Redfort sat upon the edge of the roof of the Scarlet Pagoda, watching the sun set over the Twinford skyline. At this moment she didn't know what she was feeling. Just two days before, Casey Morgan had fallen through the sky to her death. The Count had also fallen but his body was nowhere to be found. Ruby was breathing in the fresh air of the spring, trying to let all her thoughts run through her brain.
"Hey Rube," came a voice from behind her. It could only be that of her best friend, Clancy Crew. "Still thinking about The Count?"
Ruby said nothing. That question didn't need answering; Clancy could read her mind. He sat down next to her and steadily put his arm around her. Ruby rested her head on his shoulder and sighed.
"You'll be ok Ruby," Clancy held her tightly and gently brushed the hair from her face. His bright blue eyes glinted in the golden rays of the light. He stared down at her perfectly clear skin. She was an ordinary kid but in his arms she was extraordinary.
"You'll be onto greater things after this. It's only the beginning for you Ruby," he smiled down at her. The golden specks in her very green eyes looked practically perfect in the light. She smiled and held him tightly
