Ruby Redfort woke to the painfully loud sound of her alarm. The time read 6.45 and it was a Wednesday morning. She rummaged around on her desk for her glasses. They were wide, dark frames that she slid onto the top of her nose. She dragged herself out of bed and walked over to her mirror. Ruby you look terrible, she thought to herself.
On her floor, she found her favorite pair of worn out blue jeans and a T-shirt that read 'Could you repeat that? I wasn't listening'. She combed through her long, caramel brown hair and slid the fly barette to keep her hair from falling in front of her eyes. This simple accessory was really a life saving gadget provided by Spectrum. Inside this tiny hair clip was a transmitter connected to the watch of another agent. The agent in particular was Art Hitchen Zachery. Hitch to all who knew him. He was an agent of Spectrum 8, Ruby's personal body guard and protector disguised as a butler, or house manager as he liked to call himself. He was probably the most mysterious person on planet earth but he had never let her down before. Ruby had known him since she was thirteen. Three years later, she was sixteen and they were still working together. Ruby couldn't have asked for a better partner.
Ruby, rubbing her eyes, trudged downstairs to the kitchen. Greenwood house was a beautifully built house. The Redfort family had one of the best houses in Twinford.
Sitting on the third chair on the circular dining table was Hitch.
"Goodmorning kid," he said, not looking up from his coffee. He was a young looking man with dark hair. He had piercing eyes which only added to the mystery surrounding him. He had a stern face but his smile was so tender and sweet. You could class him as one of Ruby's best friends. Although they were totally different and disagreed on almost everything, they were meant to be friends. Ruby had never trusted, respected and loved anyone the way she did with Hitch. He was like a brother to her. Protective, annoying but also one of the most important people in her life. Ruby had never been short on friends but she reserved her genuine respect for those who were special.
"More coffee?" asked Ruby, smirking. There wasn't a day that had gone by in the past three years where Hitch had not had at least one coffee a day. Ruby herself preferred milkshakes and peach juice but most importantly, banana milk. She went to pour herself a glass of the slightly yellow beverage when Hitch turned to his watch. From the gentle smile that had appeared on his face there was sudden fright.
"We have to go in. LB wants to see us," Ruby could tell by his face that it was serious. This meeting would be the first time in a while she had seen LB. The boss of Spectrum 8 was a composed woman who always wore white and barely ever wore shoes. She had never been Ruby's biggest fan but she appreciated her agent abilities. After all, it was Ruby Redfort who had found LB's former agent colleague and fiance Bradley Baker. She may not have loved Ruby but she certainly did owe her. Although Baker was now dead, he really had been the best agent Spectrum had ever seen. It burned Ruby's insides to admit it as she always wanted to be the smartest in the room. Bradley had been a very special person to Ruby in the short time he had been in her life. In a way, she saw parts of herself in him and this made her strive to one day be as good of an agent as him.
Hitch unlocked his silver convertible and Ruby climbed in the passenger seat. Hitch drove them, in silence, to the entrance to Spectrum. She could tell by the lack of noise that Hitch knew something she didn't. This wasn't a surprise to Ruby as Hitch was LB's right hand man. If LB knew anything about anyone, Hitch would be the first person she would tell. It had once driven Ruby crazy, all the secrets and whispering behind her back. It was only until Spectrum 8's mole was revealed that Ruby began to understand that they did it to protect her. Either that or she just didn't need to know.
It had been a few weeks since LB had asked to see Ruby. For the past three years Ruby had been finishing her field agent training and also her Junior Space Recruitment Program training. Ruby Redfort was the second person ever to become part of larvi. Bradley Baker, of course being the first. Now she was a fully fledged agent, she had also been helping Agent Kekoa and Agent Samuel Colt train the newer agents. Being the only kid in Spectrum, Ruby often got strange looks from the trainees. With her knowledge of fighting and parkour, Ruby was very good at teaching. Also being the one of the only agents ever to survive an encounter with Count Von Viscount, Ruby knew what they were facing in the field.
Hitch pulled the car over by a wall in an underground parking lot. Placing his hand on his on the wall, little green lights in the shape of a fly lit up on the bricks. The spot in which they were parked started to sink into the underground, or to Ruby and Hitch, Spectrum 8. When the car was parked in the Spectrum corridor, Ruby climbed out of the car. Hitch barely looked at her the entire time they were waiting to be allowed into LB's office. Something was definitely wrong.
"Any idea about what's going on?" asked Ruby trying to start a conversation.
"All I can say, kid" Hitch mumbled almost so that Ruby couldn't even hear him. "Is that you won't like it. Prepare yourself."
Ruby didn't bother to reply. She knew that he wouldn't say anything more. Hitch was a quiet man when he needed to be and if he didn't want to speak, he wouldn't.
Soon Ruby was entering the pure white room. LB's office. This should be fun
