Y/n's POV
I was in the Great Hall with some friends. We were talking about something, making jokes from time to time, but something else kept catching my eye; something at the far end of the Gryffindor table.
My throat burned as I laughed. It still burned when it stopped. It burned more when I caught him reach over to hold her hand. I knew it would get worse when they would get together. I muffled a sob and excused myself to go to the restroom. They looked suspicious, but I didn't bother waiting for their approval.
There, the tears streamed down. I leaned over a sink and opened my mouth to inhale air, something I was slowly losing; instead, a bloody flower shot out. It wasn't just petals anymore. The pain was too much.
I coughed and screamed, and it all hurt, the petals scratching at my throat. I'm sure anyone passing by could hear me, but I'm glad no one bothered coming. When I was done, I washed my face not bothering about the flowers I left behind.
I got out, and I instantly fell. What the hell? I tried getting up, but I couldn't. The person nearest to me pulled me up, and I put an arm on their shoulder.
I looked up to see Severus Snape? He was never too keen on helping people unless they were rich, famous, and into dark arts or if it was Lily. (I've seen him sleep outside the Gryffindor commons.) I was neither. I wasn't even her friend. Anymore.
I remember it so clearly.
"Why can't you just be happy for me?!" she yelled.
"You're off with Toerag Potter!" I screamed back.
"It would be my problem, wouldn't it? Why do you care anyway?" she asked but now softly.
My cheeks were hot and my eyes stung. I tried not to let the tears roll down and stepped back.
"I'm in love with you, you ass," I said barely above a whisper and ran off.
I looked at Snape curiously not sure if he'd actually help or not. My eyes narrowed then thought fuck it. I tried saying something, but it came out all raspy and weird.
I cleared my throat and whispered, "Thanks?"
He rolled his eyes and brought me to the Hospital Wing. Everything became a bit dimmer with each step.
Madam Pomfrey's eyes shot to us as we burst through the doors and asked, "Goodness, what happened?"
Before I could say anything, I coughed up a couple of flowers, a bunch of blood in the mix. I guess that should explain it all.
She ran over to us and took me, bringing me to a bed. I saw her rummaging through some cabinets as I lay still.
"I'm tired," I whispered, my eyes almost closed.
"That's fine dear. Just drink this first," she replied, and I just almost couldn't hear her.
I nodded, trying to sit up. I sipped a bit before my eyes closed, the contents of the bottle probably spilling on me.
Lily's POV
As soon as Snape told me the news, I ran straight for the Hospital Wing even though I still had classes. I wonder how that'll go.
I saw her/him in the first bed to the right. (S)he looked fine but had both eyes closed. My hands shot up to my mouth as I walked closer.
There was a bucket full of white lilies covered in blood next to her/him. I looked at the sight curiously. I wasn't told about her/him coughing up flowers. After a bit with James, petals flew out of my mouth.
I sat on the right side of the bed and pursed my lips, reaching for her/his hand. Stubborn bitch. Didn't tell anyone about her/his situation. This is so like Y/n. I mean I said nothing as well, so maybe I'm the stubborn one.
I laid my head on the bed still holding her/his hand and eventually fell into darkness.
Y/n'a POV
When I woke up, someone was holding my hand. I looked to my right to see a red head of hair. I was hoping it was Molly, but that scent was too familiar. I already knew who it was. I just don't know why she'd come.
I sighed and took the bucket next to me as a precaution. If it was bad from afar, it was bad up close.
I hugged the bucket with my free hand as my throat tightened. Something was coming—I just knew it.
I tugged my hand away when I started coughing. The action probably woke her up, but I could care less right now.
It was worse than all the ones before, but then again, the next one is always worse with bigger flowers and leaves trying to fit, sometimes parts of stems coming out horizontally.
It was painful.
There was no other way to explain it. This could be the death of me with my lungs filling with blood instead of oxygen.
It sucked, and I gave up.
The flowers can stay all they want once I'm dead. I sighed mentally since I couldn't in my state and threw the bucket onto the floor.
I lied down and looked at the redhead eying me in fear. I'd like to at least die with her at my side.
"What are you doing?" she asked teary eyed.
I gave a small smile and asked in a whisper, "What does it look like?"
Her hands went up to her mouth in shock. I was losing air, and my eyes were slowly fluttering closed.
What happens then?
I shut my eyes. I guess this is how it ends.
"No!" she yelled, and a pair of lips were on mine.
I opened my eyes and pushed Lily away. I leaned over the bed, and the flowers all went out. My chest—it wasn't painful anymore. I laughed hysterically and embraced Lily.
"I didn't tell you why I was coughing up flowers," I whispered.
"I-I do too," she said.
"Why did it take so long?" I asked.
"I was scared," she said.
I pulled away and put my hands on her cheeks. She was real. All of this is real. I grinned widely and kissed her.
"You don't have to be scared anymore," I laughed after.
