The next morning, I went through my normal morning routine and took a shower before braiding my hair and putting on Jean shorts with a flowery shirt.  My brother and mom were eating breakfast in the kitchen when I came downstairs.

"Have you guys met the new neighbors?" I asked them curiously as I grabbed a banana and sat down with them.

"The Mendes's? Your father and I went over there yesterday and their mother is really sweet," my mom replied. "They have a son your age, I believe."

"I met him yesterday. He's in a couple of my classes." You can probably guess why I refrained from telling my mother about my irresponsible driving.

"You should go offer him a ride. I don't think he knows many people out here. They moved all the way from Canada, you know." She explained.

"That's not a bad idea, mom, thanks! Bye!" I walked over next door, struggling to put my backpack over my shoulders and knocked on Shawn's door. His little sister, I assume, answered the door.

"Are you Shawn's girlfriend?" She asked adorably.  Something inside of me wanted to say yes to this question, even though I didn't want it to be true, but I replied with a simple "No, I am only a friend."

Soon Shawn came to the door and pushed the little girl lightly out of the way before apologizing.  He accepted my offer for a ride and walked back to my car at my side.

“Your sister asked me if I was your girlfriend when she answered the door” I laughed, “She’s so cute.”

"She's not as cute when you live with her... But when a pretty girl walks to the door she can only guess that she'd be my girlfriend." He explained. I looked down to mask the fact that I was blushing because he called me pretty. I think.

“Oh so you only date pretty girls? I see how it is” I said jokingly.

“You know what I mean, Nicole, just accept the compliment” he laughed and light and lightly hit my arm.

I blushed again before saying “thank you” I started up the conversation by asking “Did you make any new friends at school yesterday?”

“Yeah kinda, I mean, I met a lot of fans and that was pretty cool.” He answered.

“No, I meant like other than people following you around or asking for a picture.”

“Oh, then not really haha I hope I will today.” He explained.

“Well, if you want you can sit with my friends and I at lunch.  We are all pretty chill and I know they’ll all like you.”  I told him.

“If they are anything like you, I’m sure I’ll like them back.” He said, making me blush once again.

I met Shawn at the entrance to the cafeteria right before lunch so we could for sure sit together. I showed him to my table in the middle of the cafeteria.  I sat down next to Sophie and across from Emily, and shawn sat next to me.  I thought it would be a good idea to introduce everyone to Shawn and vice versa.

Once everyone was settled I announced, “Guys, this is Shawn.  He just moved here from Canada and he’s pretty cool.” I said as he waved.  I pointed at everyone one by one around the table.  “Shawn, this is Sophie, Jackson, Morgan, Colin, Logan, Talia, Travis and Emily.”  They all said hi and smiled.  I don't want to make myself sound snotty or anything by saying I'm popular, but I have a lot of friends.  Being involved in 2 sports at the school and the music department, plus a number of clubs, I've gotten to know a bunch of really cool people from various friend groups.

“So Shawn, do you play any sports?” Colin asked from across the table.

“Not anymore, I used to play hockey, but I haven’t found a team here yet.  But I sing.”  He responded.

“Nice bro, I sing too” Logan said and fist bumped him.

“Do you have a song on Itunes?” Talia asked.

“Yeah, I do, I have a few” He said, as if it were no big deal.

“I think I’ve heard one of your songs, that’s awesome!” Talia said.  The rest of lunch was spent talking about Canada, music, Canadian food, and sports.  All of my friends loved Shawn which made me happy because maybe he’ll start hanging out with us.  I was getting up to throw away the rest of my sandwich when my back pocket vibrated. I pulled out my phone to read my latest text.

Shawn:

Thanks for introducing me to all your friends, they’re all super nice & rly cool.

Me:

No prob! It seems like they all rly like you!

Shawn:

Good i was nervous haha i like them, they seem like a good group of ppl.

I sat back down and smiled at Shawn. The bell rang and we all said our ‘see ya laters’ to all our friends before going our separate ways to next period. Someone tapped me on the back and I whipped around.

“Hey, could I get a ride home after school?” Shawn asked nervously.

“Yeah of course! See you 10th period” I said as I turned to walk up the stairs.

“Ok later Nicole!” He said, I could tell my the tone in his voice he was now smiling, even though I could no longer see his face.

I went to my classes leading up to tenth period, then I walked into the science classroom for the last period of the day. Shawn was sitting and smiling with Talia, my friend from lunch.  I know Shawn and I are just friends, but my heart hurt at the sight of seeing him so happy with another girl.  I shouldn't be hoping for anything, though, it's not like I've confessed my love for him or anything.  I don't even have any love for him, do I?  I just met him yesterday.  Shawn's eyes found mine as Talia was talking and he winked at me from across the room before turning back to her.

My heart fluttered. Why did it flutter? Nicki, you don't like him! You can't! He's famous!

"Let's take our seats, students," our teacher said almost emotionlessly.  We all sat down in our assigned seats, Shawn sitting in my view across the room and Talia right next to him.  "Today we will be beginning a project on the cell and it will require outside work. Make sure you choose a partner who you will be able to meet with outside of school."

"Shit," I mumbled under my breath. Sure, Talia was in this class and we're fine hanging out in a group but I don't know if I would be able to spend time with her alone.  As for Shawn, he wouldn't spend a second with me when he could have any girl in this class. Well, I guess I'll be working with some random kid who doesn't have a partner. I wonder if-

"Nicole!" Shawn waved his hand in front of my face as he knelt next to my desk.  "You must be thinking hard about this project.  You can tell me more when we work on it after school. Want to be my partner?"

"Oh, THE Shawn Mendes, in all his glory, would give up his millions of followers and swooning girls to study mitochondria with little old me?" I over exaggerated, which made him laugh at me. "I don't appreciate your laughing, Shawn. This is serious. I don't joke about cells." He suddenly saluted me, then walked back to his seat. I could feel his eyes on me as I wrote down the assignment in my agenda. When I looked up, he was staring at me as if he was looking at a puzzle, trying to figure me out.

"What?" I mouthed to him across the room.

He paused and shook his head before mouthing back "I don't know." God, he was flawless. The way his hair was so perfect without him even moving a strand and how his lips moved when he spoke...

Shit. I am falling for him.
