Shawn and I got in his car and Take Me to Church was on. Neither of us really understood what the song even meant, so we sort of just talked over it.
“I’m not really into the whole partying thing,” I told Shawn awkwardly. I assumed that he must have been the type to get drunk and hook up with a million girls since he is so famous and could easily do that.
“Neither am I. I knew I liked you for some reason,” he smiled. Phew. He could not be any more perfect in my eyes. It isn’t very often that you meet a celebrity who doesn’t take advantage of their fame. “So do we want to take a romantic drive through McDonald’s first?”
“Oh my god, you’re amazing,” I laughed. Only Shawn would bring me to McDonald’s when all of our friends are at a party. There was one on the way, anyway, so it isn’t really a big deal. I told him to get me some fries and a Sprite, which he ordered the largest size of. He got the same thing but with a Coke, and we drove up to the next window. “I wonder how you get the largest sizes but still manage to look like you do.” He chuckled. We got our stuff and Shawn pulled into a random parking spot.
“Let’s play a game,” I said out of the blue. He looked at me strangely.
“What kind of game?” He asked, raising an eyebrow.
“The question game. Like where I ask you something and you ask me something. I’ll start.” I thought about what I could ask him. “What was your first Vine of?”
“Oh god. It was awful. It was the worst lighting and it was like everyone’s first Vine. I didn’t even say or sing anything,” he explained, putting fries in his mouth between sentences. “Alright, Nicki, what’s your favorite movie?”
“Oh that’s an easy one,” I began. “Sixteen Candles. Not that Disney shit with the girl from Jessie but the one from the 60’s. It’s amazing.” I took a sip of my drink before asking him another question. “What do you first notice about a girl?”
“Well, that depends. For you, it wasn’t your eyes or your looks, which is what I’ve noticed first in the past. Besides the fact that you almost killed me, I noticed your little mannerisms. The way you look away from me to hide your blushing, your witty remarks, and just the way you act in general. Your looks are just icing on the cake,” he told me. It didn’t even seem like he was nervous telling me that. He was comfortable telling me about his feelings at 10:00 at night in a McDonald’s parking lot. “Who was your first crush?” He asked me. Shit. Here comes the Adam and Jessica memories.
“Um… well my first real school girl crush was in sixth grade. His name was Adam and the only person who knew I liked him was this girl named Jessica Roy. She goes to our school but I try to stay out of her way at all costs. That relationship never happened due to a game of truth or dare that went completely wrong,” I explained. I hated telling that story, even if it was to someone who I fully trusted and was beginning to love. “Yeah, I think I’m done with this game.” Shawn understood and put his hand on my knee as I began guiding him to Charles’s house. We parked on the crowded street and he followed me up to the front door. I walked in and it was a nightmare. There were so many bodies against each other and it smelled like beer and desperation. I felt like I was going to throw up. Talia ran up to us, immensely drunk from who knows what alcohol.
“You guys are here, finally!” She squealed, grabbing Shawn’s tie and leading us to the center of the action. Matchbox Twenty’s “She so Mean” was playing at full blast. Kind of strange party music, I’ll admit, but its not like anyone here is sober enough to care. I danced a little bit with my friends and Shawn pulled me aside.
