I ran inside my house to get ready for cheer practice. I grabbed a pair of royal blue spanks from my drawer and a pink, purple, and blue tie dye shirt and threw them on. I got my bag together, threw my hair into a loose ponytail and hurried out to my car. Cheer practice doesn't start till 4 today, but when the coaches say 4 it actually means be there and stretching by 3:45. I parked in the lot and entered through the gym doors. I set my bag down and joined the girls as they stretched. Emily walked in a couple of minutes later from the hallway with her backpack and cheer bag hanging from her arms.
"Where were you?" I asked her, getting up to assist her with her bag. She thanked me briefly before walking further into the gym.
"Colin and I were in the library studying for the AP physics tests tomorrow," she told me. It seemed as though she was used to the fact that she and Colin were dating, which made me content with myself. We set her stuff down and finished stretching with the group. Ocasionally, I heard Shawn's name brought up in side conversations about his EP. People even asked me if I knew anything about it. I shrugged and carried on practicing, since what he told me is probably just meant for my ears. As we cleaned our movements and made them sharp, all that ran through my mind was what Shawn said about me being his inspiration. It was pretty scary to be honest. Oh well, maybe it will be for the better.
Practice was supposed be finished at 6, but somehow I managed to be out of there by 5:56. I looked at the time and ran as fast as I could to my car so I could hear Shawn on the radio at 6. I got in, shut my door, and turned on the radio. As soon as I tuned in the radio announcer said, "Now everyone, I'd like to welcome our special guest, Shawn Mendes!"
"Hi Rick, how are you?" I heard Shawns voice ask him.
"I'm good and excited to hear your new songs." Rick replied.
"I can't wait either." He said, laughing a little.
"Before we hear them, I would like to ask you about the songs."
"Well, you guys will be listening to a song called 'Show You' and 'One of Those Nights'. Then, I will also be performing another new song, live, called "The Weight'." He sounded pretty excited, which made a smile creep upon my face as I sat in my car, in the school parking lot. All the sudden my car door opened and Emily hopped in the passenger seat.
"Hey, can I listen to Shawn with you?" She asked.
"Sure, but shh, it's starting." I said, turning up the volume knob. Shawn announced 'Show You' as instruments started playing in the background. While listening, Emily and I both found ourselves smiling. The song had an uplifting, happy tone. Shawn was singing about how he won't let people tell him what to do and saying he will show them how successful he will be. This song perfectly describes him because he always has a pretty positive attitude. It was a fun happy song with wistling and a good beat, which Emily and I decided we liked. He did a little rapping thing in the middle of the song, which I thought was really cute and Em just laughed. It was kind of like Ed Sheeran's rapping.
"This would be a good car jam!" Emily said, making me laugh because it was so out of the blue.
"True! I hope all his new songs are somewhat like this." I agreed. Shawn them came back on to give a brief description about the next song.
"This song is called 'One of Those Nights'." He said. "I wrote it about a weekend I had earlier this year, not long after moving to LA." He continued before the song started playing. I wondered what night it would be about. As the song continued I listened closely to the lyrics.
"Oh my gosh." I said in disbelief.
"What is this song about? It kind of sound like the beach house weekend." Emily said.
