"It's Lorie... She's been missing for hours now."

I'm left speechless for a moment, looking at Nicolae and trying to make sense of his words.

"Lorie's... What? Are you sure?"

Sarah places a hand on my shoulder to signal her support, and probably also to underscore the reality of the situation.

"She's been missing since earlier this afternoon. We've tried to find her, but in vain..." Sarah

"I don't understand... How can a kid leave the manor without you noticing, Nicolae?" Drogo

"That kid, as you call her, is much older than you, and when she has her mind set on something, she knows how to get it." Nicolae

"Are you saying she can scramble your senses and block you out without you noticing?" Red

"I don't know how she does it, but just like all child vampires, she can vary the intensity of her aura and make herself undetectable." Nicolae

"A sort of safeguard to escape potential danger, I guess... It's rather useful ability, actually!" Sarah

"Yeah, well, we could do without it!" Drogo

Nicolae seems particularly wound up and Drogo is seconds away from losing it, so I do my best to keep calm.

"As you've said, Nicolae, Lorie is no ordinary little girl. She'll know how to get by until we find her." Red

"That's only if she wants us to find her... She seemed very sad and angry after you left." Nicolae

So it's all our fault? Did Lorie run away because she thinks I'm hogging Drogo and he wouldn't spend enough time with her?

I quickly look over at Drogo. Lorie left because of our selfishness...

"I'm so mad at myself: I've been a terrible brother... I could tell Lorie was feeling down, but when she asked me to read her a story, I just sent her away to her room." Nicolae

I'm hardly any better: Drogo and I were the first to reject her. If anything happens to Lorie, we won't be able to forgive ourselves!

"Where's Peter?" Drogo

"He left to look for Lorie in the surrounding woods..." Nicolae closes his eyes and pinches the bridge of his nose.

"But I doubt she's there. She's always hated places where she might get her dress dirty." Nicolae

"What about her scent? Have you tried following it?" Drogo

"Obviously, but it stops at the front steps... So it's impossible to track her."

Drogo clenches his fists impotently.

I stay quiet for a few seconds, thinking the situation over. There must be a way to find her... Whether she wants us to or not! The gears in my head are spinning like crazy when an idea suddenly springs to mind.
