"What the hell was that dad?" I asked when we finally got home. The whole drive from my grandparents' house was silent and my mind was racing with so many questions. I couldn't actually believe any of it was true.

"Get upstairs and pack a bag something light enough for you to be able to carry but big enough to have all the essentials you'll need. Essentials only Mel." He said ignoring my question and rushing upstairs.

I followed him and watched as he ran into his study and started rummaging through the drawers. He looked frantic. Worried even.

"I'm not doing anything until you tell me what's going on." I said folding my arms across my chest. He looked up and rushed over to me holding my face in his hand.

"I promise you once you are safe I will explain everything to you. I just need you to pack up what you think is important and meet me in here when you're done with your bag. Please sweetheart." He said softly. I nodded my head slowly and turned to the direction of my room.

I didn't know how long we were going for or what to count as essential. Grabbing my back pack I emptied the books that were in it and started packing. I put in a change of clothes, my toothbrush and underwear. I added my laptop and its charger, headsets, powerbank, hardrive, phone charger and IPod. I threw in a novel and my journal and rushed to the bathroom.

After taking a quick shower I changed into a pair of black jeans, a black t-shirt and a yellow and black flannel shirt. Throwing on my shoes I grabbed the bag and went back to my dad's office where he was drawing symbols on the walls of his fireplace.

"Dad?" I asked cautiously making him stand and wave me towards him.

"This journal contains everything you need to know about the creatures we've encountered. Strengths, weaknesses, whether or not they're a threat." He said placing a thick black journal in my hand.

"Dad..."

"I'm sending you to the cabin in California. I have a friend waiting for you there. He'll take you to the safe house where you'll meet a Logan Black. He'll explain everything to you?"

"What's going on dad?" I asked as my fear slowly grew.

"I'm sorry baby girl. I need you to know that I love you so much." He whispered a tear falling down his face. I wrapped my arms around him and held on to him. I felt him slip something into my jean pocket.

I pulled away wanting to ask what it was but before I could talk I heard an explosion from downstairs. Dad sucked in a quick breath before turning to me.

"They're here." He said.

"Who's here?"

"Don't trust anyone. Don't call anyone. Leave your phone here in case they track it. Quickly." He said. I left my phone on the table and for good measure removed my laptop too. He pushed me into the fireplace and before I could protest I was engulfed by blue flames. I closed my eyes and screamed expecting pain but nothing happened. When I opened them again I found myself sitting in another fireplace.

I stepped out and looked around slowly. I was in another office. From the picture on the desk I guessed it belonged to dad. How the hell was I here and where was here?

"Dad?" I called out.

"He's not here." A voice said in the darkness. I jumped and turned and found a guy who looked close to my age leaning against the door of the room.

"Who are you?" I asked taking a step back.

"I was sent to retrieve you." He said simply.

"Where am I? Where's my father?"
