11. God Cares

Have you ever wondered about where God is in the numerous crises in our world? In many places, there is much physical suffering. There is also a great deal of fear surrounding our collective economic future. Some might wonder if God really cares about what is happening!

It's good to continue reading the story of God's people from Genesis to Exodus as we see very clearly that God cares deeply about His children! He hears the cries of the Israelites who had become slaves to the Egyptians after being saved by them during the years of famine. They were never meant to remain in Egypt but now it looked like they had no choice as they became slaves in that foreign land!

"During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them."
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭2:23-25‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Despite their mistakes, God still heard His people. He remembered the covenant He made with their forefathers and as He observed their situation of slavery, He was concerned. Plans were already underway to raise up a man who would lead the Israelites out of Egypt. This was not straightforward as the Egyptians were trying to reduce the Israelite population growth by ordering that all baby boys be killed! However, this ruling could not stop God's plans for rescue!

"Now a man of the tribe of Levi married a Levite woman, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.

Then Pharaoh's daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her female slave to get it. She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. "This is one of the Hebrew babies," she said. Then his sister asked Pharaoh's daughter, "Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?" "Yes, go," she answered.

So the girl went and got the baby's mother. Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you." So the woman took the baby and nursed him. When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh's daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, "I drew him out of the water.""

Here we see God intervening and preserving the life of Moses so His plans and purposes would prevail! As you live through challenging times, remember God's ears are still tuned to the voices of His people today and we can be sure that He is concerned and intends to keep His promises. God is already taking action, working in people's situations to release them from whatever oppression they face!

Dear Lord,

How reassuring it is to be reminded that You care about the plight of our world! Thank You for hearing every cry that has gone out in recent months. Thank You for the concern You have for Your people and the way You are always true to Your promises. May we continue on in faith, trusting You even when we cannot see things changing.
