13. God Speaks

When you think of God, does He seem like He is far away in the distance? From time to time, we can get so bogged down with what is going on in our day to day lives, that we can forget that He wants to talk to us, just like a loving Father would talk to his children. Having God as our Heavenly Father means we can be sure He wants to have fellowship with us, to spend time with us all throughout the day.

Sometimes He gets our attention through things in nature and we find ourselves sensing His presence as we marvel at the sunrise or notice a particularly magnificent flower. As we read the Bible, we are reminded again and again, that God gets people's attention and speaks directly to them in many different ways. One that has always amazed me, is the way He spoke to Moses:

"Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, "I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up." When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, "Moses! Moses!" And Moses said, "Here I am.""
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭3:1-4‬ ‭NIV‬‬

God knew that this strange burning bush would cause Moses to be curious enough to come closer. He knows us so well and is constantly drawing us in similar ways if we just pay attention! It might not be a burning bush but God's amazing love and grace, draws us closer when we least expect it!

Moses had been living a very humble existence as a shepherd out in the wilderness, taking care of his father in law's sheep. It seems he didn't even have his own sheep and yet God chose to speak to him! We need to remember that God speaks to people from all walks of life and in all sorts of situations.

Notice that the burning bush caught Moses' attention but God didn't speak until he chose to come right over. When the Lord saw he had gone over to look, that is when He spoke. Perhaps there are times when we open God's Word the Bible as part of our daily quiet time but it has almost become a ritual —our heart is not there and so we find we don't hear from Him. Could it be that we have not turned our attention to Him? Our mind can be full of other things regarding work, family and the cares of daily living. Be aware of making time to truly pay attention to God's Word just as Moses did when God spoke to him from the bush.

God called Moses' name, even though he was living a life of obscurity in the wilderness. God knew who Moses was and we can be sure that He knows our name too! He is lovingly drawing you to Himself and gently calling out your name. Are you ready to say as Moses did, 'Here I am'?

Let's pray:

Dear Lord,

Thank You for getting my attention and drawing me closer to You through Your Word. I am so blessed to be able to read it and I am ready to listen to whatever You have to say. These quiet moments with You are so special but I know I need to be more aware of You even in the midst of a busy day. Please help me with this! I look forward to hearing Your voice today. Thank You for seeing me and loving me just as I am.

Amen.
