"New girl, give me a hand will you."

Y/N was on her way back to the living quarters to speak with Tae when the guy who introduced himself earlier as Hoseok appears, arms full of boxes.

"Erm, sure. I did promise Tae the two of us would talk, so as long as it doesn't take too long I can help."

Hoseok smiles as he passes her one of the boxes.

"Don't worry, Tae took a shower then passed out waiting for you."

Y/N instantly feels guilty. "I didn't mean to keep him waiting."

"It's okay, Jiminie told us you were speaking with Guk so he decided to get some rest."

Of course he did.

That guy is really starting to get on her nerves.

"So, how did your conversation with Joonie go?" Hoseok cocks a brow inquisitively as he starts walking down the opposite corridor, keeping a steady pace so Y/N can keep up with him.

"It was quick, rushed. I got the basic information of what you guys do but he didn't really elaborate, barely even looked at me." Come to think of it, Y/N has never had such difficulty in trying to read someone. Namjoon had barely looked at her, just fleeting glances and even then there was no emotion, no indication to what he was feeling or what his thoughts of her were either.

Hoseok chuckles, seems like he was expecting that answer.

"Joonie is difficult to read, he's been through so much and now has us to keep safe so things aren't easy for him. I know he seems cold and standoffish but it's just his defence mechanism, give him time and give him reason to trust you and he will soon open up."

Y/N doesn't know what she can possibly do at this point to get Namjoon to trust her, she's already offered her help and he turned it down.

What else was she supposed to do?

"What about you? Why did you join the organisation?" She doesn't expect him to answer, won't be offended by it, but she wants to at least try to build bridges.

"I grew up in a foster home, never knew my biological family and didn't want to either. I guess I was bitter, still am."

"I'm sorry, nobody should have to go through something like that." Y/N feels her heart ache for Hoseok, doesn't blame him for feeling bitter because if she was in his position she would probably feel exactly the same.

Hoseok shrugs. "It is what it is, not something I can change so all I can do now is focus on the people who matter to me."

"I'm guessing that's how you ended up with the organisation then?"

"Yeah." Hoseok nods, stopping just outside two large doors as he places his boxes on the floor. "I didn't like my foster family so ran away, spent months on the streets and got involved with the wrong kinds of people." He pauses, keys in a code and the doors open with a mechanical hiss. "I was approached by an agent for the organisation and offered a place to stay, I was young and desperate so figured it was better to take them up on their offer then stay out on the streets. I wasn't expecting the organisation to be what it was, always had my doubts about them but didn't really have a choice, it was either stay with them and at least have a place to stay or try to escape and head back out to the streets." Hoseok picks the boxes back up, stepping through the doors and motioning for Y/N to follow.

The laboratory they entered was dimly lit, a thin film of dust lay on everything. There were plasma screens across the far wall, several pipettes and tubes across one bench and the steady hum of machinery like a soft whisper in the background.
