She doesn't know how it feels to yearn for the drug
To tip the bottle and take a slug
To watch the blood flow down her wrists
To scream and cry and just end all of it

But she knows what it's like to want something she can never have
Like on the subway when she fell onto his lap
They shared a glance and talked like lifelong friends
But his stop was next, this was the end

His hair, his laugh, his brown eyed grin
His smile, his voice, she'll never hear again
The memories, the details, will all start to fade
But she'll never forget that beautiful day

The sky was dark and the leaves turned brown
She was late for work, she spilled her coffee on the ground
But there was something about him that made her happy
If only she knew he was the kind of tornado you can't see

Two years later, they meet again
At the same old train station, with a group of friends
They ditched the crowd and walked along the streets
Their movement in sync with the city's beat

They talked and laughed and explored the night
Hand in hand, by each other's side
They skipped down Abbey Road
Moving in the direction the cherry blossoms flowed

Three years later, they're husband and wife
There's an infinite amount of good days in their life
Even on a cloudy day
Their love will prevail, they'll be okay

She was home alone, and he was out late
She believed he was working, but he was out on a date
She waited for him to come to her
But he leaves before he can hurt her first

He came back the next day, sober but afraid
She was worried sick, oblivious to his facade
She helped him lie down and they talked it out
He lied to her face, saying he went out of town

She asked him why
He said nothing but a lie
For all she knew he was visiting a friend
If only she knew that they were close to the end

He came home late every week
She thought it was nothing, but she was naive
It felt like leaving, until he did
And that was the end of Henry and Syd

He never came back, and she never trusted again
He broke her in half, this was really the end
Except it wasn't
Because she still loved him

If only he knew of the things she's been through
Her scars and screams, all the fights she let herself lose
She ran to the toilet, mouth full of bile
Only to realize, she was with child

Nine months later, she had a little hand to hold
Someone to cherish when the nights were cold
They had each other, they were just fine
Her missing piece was finally filled, she was alright

When Sam turned six, he asked about his dad
He had his mother's brains, he knew when she was sad
He could hear her crying all night long
He ran to her room and sang her a song

Mama are you crying cause daddy's not home?
Of course not, bubba, I'm not alone
Then why are you still crying? I hate when you're sad
My tears know I'm trying to hate your dad

Two years later, Sam was eight
Syd seemed happier, she even went on a date
The guy was nice, but she wasn't ready
She came back home, a little unsteady

Mama are you okay? You don't look well
She was not okay, she wanted to yell
I'm fine bubba, just go back to bed
But then she fell and hit her head

There's a mass in your brain, the doctor said
This can't be true, get me out of this bed
Will my Mama be okay? Sam asked
It's hard to tell now, it'll start to spread fast

He prayed every night, for her to fight through
But something told him, it wasn't what she wanted to do
Then one night, the monitor flat lined
He stood in shock as she closed her eyes

Henry came back, asking for his sixteen year old son
Sam screamed in his face saying, look what you've done
I didn't mean for things to end up like this
Well it did, and you're the one to blame for it

Henry left once again
Sam was alone with his so called friends
They left him too, when things got rough
And this was the end, he had enough

She didn't know how it felt to yearn for the drug
To tip the bottle and take a slug
To watch the blood flow down her wrists
To scream and cry and just end all of it

She only knew she wanted him
But the love between them wore thin
She was addicted to a love unrequited
But cancer was addicted to her and she couldn't fight it

Sam didn't want to end up in this place
He didn't want to be so scared and ashamed
But that's just the way that life works
She left him before she could hurt him first

Unlike his mother, he wasn't addicted to love
He wanted the bottle, he wanted the drug
And one day, he took too much
He lied on the bathroom floor, longing for an angel's touch

No one came for him, no one cared
He was left on the floor with a ghostly stare
And just like Syd, his eyes closed, he couldn't resist it
He was gone forever and no one would ever know he even existed
