SCENE EIGHT
(CHRISTINE at play rehearsal. CHLOE approaches, flanked by BROOKE. JENNA ROLAN sits nearby.)
"Awh, why weren't you with them?" Christine asks innocently.
Jenna replies, "We weren't really friends at the time."
CHLOE
Is this seat saved?
CHRISTINE
Oh, yeah-
(CHLOE sits down anyway.)
Jade snorted.
CHLOE
Jenna Rolan said she saw you at the mall with Jake last night.
CHRISTINE
Yeah, that's... who it's saved for...
BROOKE
Jenna Rolan?
JENNA
I'm right here.
"Oh!" Brooke laughed. "I thought they meant the seat was saved for Jenna, not asking where you where! Sorry Jen..." Jenna smiles at her.
"It's okay!"
CHLOE
Jake's not coming.
CHRISTINE
Is he sick?
CHLOE
He's at Model U.N. Or whatever it is this week. You know Jake. Always jumping from one...extracurricular to another.
"Oof..." Michael says, understanding what Chloe was implying.
CHRISTINE
I don't know him that well...
CHLOE
Well, he loves to try new things. He just doesn't always stay with them after
he...tries them. If you know what I-
Jake rolls his eyes.
CHRISTINE
We're just friends.
CHLOE
What?
CHRISTINE
I know you guys used to date? So, if that's what this is about...
CHLOE
Oh my god no! Jake and I are totally over!
BROOKE
Yeah, he's so gross.
"Wow, thanks..."
CHLOE
He's not gross, Brooke. (Beat.) Friends. I'm so glad. Because, real talk, I would hate for you to think that the reason Jake's not here...is he's already bored of you.
"Geez, don't be so harsh Chlo." Jake tells her.
(beat) Bye!
(CHLOE, BROOKE and JENNA walk away.)
"Why did you still follow them if you weren't friends?" Christine asks. Jenna just shrugs.
CHLOE
Jake better not be inviting her to his Halloween party.
"That's so nice of you Chloe."
(JEREMY enters with his SQUIP.)
JEREMY
Is this seat taken?
CHRISTINE
I... Don't know.
JEREMY
(prompted by his SQUIP) Then how about I sit here til whoever shows up?
