*~*~*

The final bell rings for the day, telling the students that they are free to leave the prison called high school. David Jacobs inwardly sighs as he gathers his stuff in his backpack, wondering if he should really go back home. He did not want to go back to that hellhole  of a home again.

David, or more known as Davey, did not want to go back and hear all the screaming and shouting between his mother and stepfather.

He didn't want to see his mother's tear streaked face.

He didn't want to see his mother's bruised arm.

He didn't want to see his little brother's terrified face.

He didn't want to send his brother to Jack's house when things were bad at his house.

He didn't want to feel the sting of a hand slapping his face.

He didn't want to hear the criticism that he had to hear daily.

He didn't want to go back and see a brokenhearted mother.

He didn't want to go back and find his brother all bruises up.

Most of all, he didn't want to go back in a home where there is no love.

This all could've been prevented if his dad didn't get killed while on duty.

Davey quickly tried to push that out of his mind, not wanting to tear up at school. He has learned to not show your emotions at all until you are completely by yourself. He had learned that the hard way.

When his father died, Davey was barely thirteen. Both he and his family were completely heartbroken when they were given the news. His father had died on a traffic stop when he was going to do give a man a ticket for speeding. His dad got out of the car and didn't see the gun that the other man had. Before he knew what happened, Davey's father was shot in the chest as the other man in the vehicle hurried away. His father was never able to come back home. And this broken them both completely.

In the months following the accident, Davey's mother had been having a rough time making ends meet. She would work day and night, often leaving before Davey and Les would wake up and coming home long after they went to bed.

During the hours that they would be home alone, Davey would wonder how life would be if his dad hadn't died on patrol. He missed having his mom around. He felt so abandoned. He especially missed his dad.

Soon, however, there would be a speck of light at the end of the dark tunnel for Davey and his family. Or so it seemed.

When Davey was fourteen, his mother met a man and fell in love, marrying him a year later. Life was beginning to go well for Davey, he had a father figure in his life and his mother was herself again. They were one happy family. Those times, however, were about to be cut short thanks to a four letter word.

Beer.

His stepfather began to drink beer one day when Davey was fifteen years old, and it had gone down hill from there. Everyday would bring a new reason for him to hit Davey, Les, and their mother, and he would have no regrets. Davey's mother would try to calm him down, but it would be no use. He became more abusive and violent as each day went on, making life for his stepsons and wife completely unbearable.
